This study researched Korean play therapy clinics various experiences in limit setting in play therapy and made a list of limit set behaviors. The study also examined the status of limit behaviors that play therapists had already set and investigated standards of play therapy clinics limit settings against child clients through verifying differences between play therapists recognition in necessity of limit setting and behavior toward limit setting. The main purpose of the research is to be applied to basic materials for the cultivation and education of specialists in the field of play therapy.
A survey was carried out on 102 play therapists who had had one or more experiences in play therapy. A list of limit set behaviors for the study was collected based on past researches, and then limit behaviors were reorganized and categorized into 6 with a total of 41 behaviors on the basis of limit behaviors that Korean play therapists had already reported. And then, the 41 behaviors were given a feasibility test by 5 specialists.
Frequencies of each limit behavior, independent t-test and paired t-test were used for data analysis. Along with statistical results, case studies were additionally explained.
Research results concerning the study are as follows.
The final 41 limit set behaviors against child clients were divided into 6 categories - danger to health and safety, attack against the play therapist, destruction of the therapy rooms environment, physical contact, sexual contact, violation of the therapy rooms rules. Survey results on differences between play therapists recognition in necessity of limit setting and behavior toward limit setting according to the therapists experience showed that there was partial difference in limit behaviors such as danger to health and safety, destruction of the therapy rooms environment, physical contact and attack against the play therapist.
In a situation where play therapists health and safety were in danger and the therapy rooms environment was destructed, they realized the necessity of limits to child clients in behavior and took an immediate and firm attitude to it.
According to survey results on the necessity of limit setting depending on whether or not a play therapist experienced limit setting, play therapists who didnt have an experience in limit setting more highly recognized the necessity of limit behaviors in the categories of physical contact and sexual contact. And play therapists who had an experience in limit setting didnt take action as much as they recognized the necessity of limit behaviors in physical contact and sexual contact. It can be induced that when the limit setting is applied to play therapy clinics before play therapists dont experience it, they can be confused or undergo mental conflict, and that they try to research limit set behaviors but they hesitate to take action of them.
Survey results on the status of limit setting during the play therapy process showed that in the categories of danger to health and safety and destruction of the therapy rooms environment, the main complaint of child was about attention deficit, while in the category of attack against the play therapist, they mostly complained of disobedience. In the categories of physical contact and sexual contact, they complained of reactive attachment disorder the most, while violation of the therapy rooms rules was mostly seen at children who had problem with attention deficit, social relationship, and disobedience. It can be concluded that behaviors that play therapists limited during the early conceptualization and limit behaviors whose frequency was high were related to ones in the category of violation of the therapy rooms rules.
Limit settings are very important during the play therapy process and most of them were presented by each play therapists standards but it is more necessary to take action with common principles and standards. When they make a limit setting, they need to be take a neutral attitude and bear themselves with coolness so that they can control childrens behaviors. To do this, play therapists need to be educated and trained for limit setting through experiences based on common standards and principles. Accordingly, based on a list of limit behaviors and survey results obtained from the study, more researches which can be applied to education and clinical training programs and which can help play therapists improve their specialty must continue.
