This research was conducted to study on counselors' strategies according to the types of problems of telephone counseling, and the purpose is to suggest useful ways to increase the efficiency in activities of volunteers for telephone counseling.
The subjects of this study were 199 volunteers working for a telephone-counseling center Lifeline for over one year, and the data were analyzed SPSS Window 10.1 to identify how effective it was if strategies according to the types of problems such as counseling skills and short-term problem solving-centered counseling were applied to telephone counseling. The main results of this study are as follows:
Firstly, the result showed that it were effective if counselors used counseling strategies such as 'listening techniques', 'counseling training' and 'counseling skills' in telephone counseling. Listening techniques had an influence on the types of problems related to conjugal relations, infidelity of spouses, and adolescents' relationship with the opposite sex, concerning types of problems according to clients. Counseling training affected meaningfully the types of problems related to adolescents' relationship with the opposite sex, disabled people in mental or physical abilities, suicidal crises, and socio-economic affairs. Counseling skills had an impact on the types of problems related to conjugal relations and suicidal crises. In consequence, it was found that the more serious problems the clients have, the more effective the use of counseling strategies is if counselors use them differently according to the types of problems.
Second, the result showed that if counselors used short-term counseling strategies such as 'setting up the aim of counseling', 'cooperating with clients', 'using clients' information', and 'problem solving-centered conversation', concerning the types of problems according to clients, it came into positive effect on counseling. The strategy, setting up the aim of counseling, had an influence on the types of problems related to conjugal relations, infidelity of spouses, and socio-economic affairs. The strategy, cooperating with clients, affected positively the types of problems related to conjugal relations, infidelity of spouses, and socio-economic affairs. The strategy, using clients' information, had an influence on the types of problems related to conjugal relations, infidelity of spouses, and socio-economic affairs. The strategy, problem solving-centered conversation, was useful to solve the types of problems related to conjugal relations and infidelity of spouses. Consequently, it was found that the use of short-term counseling strategies focused on problem solving is very effective.
