Arari is a representative folksong in Gangwon Province. This Arari is originated from Jeongseon, but it is now being sung every region in Gangwon Province. It is not that difficult to hear a few pieces of folksong from the elderly living in small villages though transmission of songs is not active as it was. Arari refers to three kinds of Araris: Geen-Arari (slow tempo), Jajin-Arari (quick tempo) and Yeokkeum- Arari(variation).
This thesis aims to examine the sphere of Arari in Gangwon Province through cultural background and to analyze the aspects of handing down of Geen-Arari. For this, I intend to make known the characteristics and the stature of Arari in Gangwon Province through investigation into the sources of Arari in Gangwon Province. I divided Gangwon Province into three regions―Northern Youngseo, Southern Youngseo and Youndong―according to the interrelation words of songs with a refrain and a distribution rate in three Araris. It is divided by the region in which Geen-Arari and Jajin-Arari have been sung most and by the region in which Yeokkeum-Arari has been dominated.
In order to the local peculiarity presented in folksong, I selected Geen-Arari that includes particular geographical designation in the words of songs and compared with those of other kinds of Arari. The research shows that Arari in Southern Youngseo Arari in the southern part of Han river―mentions geographical designations and then, has been closely related with lives of the singers. In addition, I compared the features of Arari'a words in the whole country with Arari in Gangwon Province in order to know unique features of Arari in Gangwon Province. It is revealed that Arari in Jeollabuk-do contains lots of words referring to amusement and the words of Arari in Chungcheongbuk-do is similar to those of Banga-Taryeong.
Next, I examined the geographical condition to know cultural background of Arari. Gangwon is river head of Han river. Trade were very active along with the waterway of Han river in the past. It is evident that Geen-Arari in Jeongseon and Inje has spreaded into the region of Gyeonggi province and Seoul. Now, there is even found reversal influx of folksong due to phonography. Waterway divides Gangwon Province into the region of northern Han river and southern Han river, and Baekdudaegan which runs south and north in Gangwon divides Gangwon into Youngseo and Youngdong. According to assumption of the transmission route of Arari by examining network of old road and waterway, Arari were sung in the region of high altitude in Baekdudaegan Youngseo and then, spreaded into other regions through waterway or by land.
The geographical feature of Gangwon Province is high in the east and low in the west because Baekdudaegan runs north and south. Geen-Arari were largely distributed around Baekdudaegan. People in the region adjacent Seoul developed the factors of amusement by making ballad Jab-ga. In addition, the east area of Baekdudaegan is connected with the east sea and Jajin-Arari sung by farmers in the period of rice planting shared the region much more than kinds of Arari.
People in Gangwon Province after Korean modernization changed their view that objectify nature into that share nature with them
This thesis manifests that Arari can suggest a possibility of coexisting of nature and human beings.
