The purpose of the study was to prompt a better understanding of children that are not under the care of their biological parents because of death, divorce, leaving home or separation. This study also provides the basic data to search out a method in improve foster children adjustment to social life with in the family functioning.
In order to achieve the goals of the study, 126 foster children and 237 children living with their biological parents, in Pusan were compared in relation to the family function of foster care and the social development of the foster children. And Gender, age, grade in school, financial level, period of time in foster care, and fostering form were all set factors as the regression analysis was used to search for the influence on social adjustment of the foster child in the family functioning.
The following is the conclusion based on the results of the research.
First, most foster children are in a Kinship Care foster program and living with their grandparents. Over 50% of the children in foster care are in a foster home for a period of over seven years with their foster family. The primary reasons for a child being placed in foster care are divorce or the death of the father.
Second, the perception of the family unit and the social adjustment of the foster children and the children living with their biological parents were compared. The children living with their biological parents were studied to provide a standard and then compared to the children living in foster care. The perception of the family unit was significantly different between the two groups. The social adjustment of the both groups of children was equivalent with no significant differences. When comparing social adjustment by the score in school and the financial level of the foster home, the foster child with high scores in school and is above middle class financially has adjusted better socially than a child living the same circumstances with their biological parents.
Third, the result from using Pearson Correlation coefficient In order to investigate the relation about family function and social adjustment shows that is family function of foster homes and children' social adjustment has genenaly high correlation. That is the consequence for children that having higher family function, higher level of social adjustment.
Lastly, to verify the effect on social adjustment related with family function of foster children who were in foster home, researcher used regression analysis, the result showed that was 16.1% which was the family function effect social adjustment fluctuation.
Based on the results of the research the suggestions are as follows:
First, the family unit significantly influences social adjustment for foster children. Family camp and family events are two great ways to provide emotional support and communication development between foster parents and foster children. And children in foster homes have a lower perception of family than those living with their biological parents, which makes programs to promote the importance of family to foster children.
Second, it doesn't show the difference of level between foster children and real parents children. It shows that there are children who has high level of adjustment state in foster care.
Third, the relation between scores in school and the financial level in the foster home, have a significant impact on social adjustment. After school programs need to be implemented to help with grades through and the financial situation.
Finally, the main factor of family separations from divorce, death, and mother's leaving home(remarriage) with father's death need to be prevented if possible, and in the case of death the single parent needs help and support.
