This study is designed to effect positive changes in the emotion of children who are characterized by egocentrism by helping them discover physical and mental instincts through Buddhist meditation.
And this research is also aimed at presenting measures to cultivate children's desire and practical will for the general happiness of the whole community and to perceive Buddhist way of thinking in terms of inevitable retribution as well as attitudes to accept others as they are and themselves with the aid of meditation.
Therefore the ultimate purpose of this study is to come up with various meditation activities appropriate for childhood on the basis of Samatha and Vipassana, the practices of Buddhist discipline, to apply them to integrative activities programs and to determine what influences the programs will have on the emotional development of infants.
The subjects were composed of 40 children at the age of 7 under the care of a public day-care center in the city of Seongnam. The researcher divided them into two groups: one served as a contrast one: the other served as an experiment one. The latter was exposed to meditation activities based on class models fit for integrative educational activity programs.
An intelligent test developed by Yi Byeong-rae(1997) was employed so as to measure the development of children's emotion and the researcher and the teacher compared the results before and after the experiment. And the researcher delineated changes before and after the unfoldment of the curriculum on the basis of children's cases and episodes with a view to taking a close look at changes in the emotional development of children belonging to the experiment group.
After meditation, the subjects were allowed to express themselves in a number of ways: working on imaginary clues, drawing what they think, classifying their experiences and engaging in discussion, etc.
The researcher relied on SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) program to make an analysis of the findings, counting on paired t-test so as to determine the degree of children's emotional development before and after Buddhist meditation activities.
The survey shows that the experiment group' self-recognition, expression abilities, self-adjustment, motivation abilities, abilities to recognize others, adjustment of others, and interpersonal relationship abilities, or emotional quotients improved significantly after the Buddhist meditation activities.
And the researcher came to the conclusion that six children with problems related with emotional unstability, atrophy, inferiority, and isolation, etc could be relieved of their symptoms.
Therefore, Buddhist meditation activities proved to be effective in the improvement of children's E.Q.
