The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the career program on the career identity of middle school students.
The hypothesis for this study are as follows.
1. Would the experimental group which participated in the career program show higher career identity than the controlled group which didn't participate in this program?
2. Would the career program have an effect on improving the subordinate factors of career identity?
1) Would the career program have an effect on improving the stability degree?
2) Would the career program have an effect on improving the object-orientedness degree?
3) Would the career program have an effect on improving the uniqueness degree?
4) Would the career program have an effect on improving the self-assertion degree?
5) Would the career program have an effect on improving the self-being awareness degree?
The subject of this study is seventy students of Gamchun Middle School in Busan, and they are divided into the experimental group(N=35) and the controlled group. (N=35). The questions on Career Identity are used to know if the students have established their self-images on their goals, interests and abilities in their career.
As to the measurement tool for this study, I referred to not only the literatures and preceding studies on vacational identity but also the test revised by Park Ah-chung(1984) with Holland's Vocational Identity Scale(1980), Jun Yoon-sik's Self-identity Test(1988), and Digan's Self-identity Test(1965).
In terms of study procedure, the experimental group took the career program once a month(8 times in total) while the controlled group did not take any treatment during the period. Both groups had the post-test respectively with time difference on the last day of the career program.
The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, the result of the pre-test and the post-test on career identity degree showed significant differences within the level of t-value 8.3222, p<.01. Therefore, the career program has an effect on improving the total score of career identity degree.
Second, the result of the pre-test and the post-test on the subordinate factors such as stability degree, object-orientedness degree, uniqueness degree, self-assertion degree, self-being awareness degree showed significant differences within the level of t-value 5.645, 6.323, 9.94, 8.337, 9.998, p<.05 respectively. Therefore, the career program has an effect on improving the subordinate factors of career identity degree.
Consequently, the career program has a positive effect on improving the career identity degree of middle school students.
