This Study aimed at finding out how effective mathematical activity through a group game is on mathematical concept development of young children.
The studied also focuses on how mathematical activity through a group game has an effect on sorting, ordering, time, space and measurement concepts respectively, which are the sub-factors of the mathematical concepted.
The subjects of the studied were extracted from 57 young children (27 boys, 30 girls) who were 4 years old in Korean age attending A and B kindergartens located in D City. Those children were divided into three groups; 20 children, comprised of 10 boys and 10 girls, made the experimental group, 18 children, comprised of 10 boys and 8 girls, made the comparison group, and 19 children, comprised of 7 boys and 12 girls, made the control group.
The tool used in this study was the Cronbach α= .78 used by Barron (1979), Copeland(1979) with Piaget's task to measure the mathematical concept development of young children and reformed by Jung, Hee-Dal (1990).
The experimental treatment was conducted from May 17 to July 9, 2004, for a total of 24 times over 8 weeks. During that time, the experimental group performed the mathematical activity program through a group game, the comparison group did the activity with paper and pencil using learning paper, and no activity had been performed with the control group.
To see if those activities were effective on the children's mathematical concepted, the groups were tested for 5 days before and after experiment.
The One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for the previous test of the mathematical concept to verify the homogeneity of the three groups and the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to see the effects of experimental treatment.
The results of the study were as follows:
First, there was meaningful difference in the mathematical concept development between the three groups. That is, the experimental group showed higher mathematical concept than the other two groups.
Second there were also significant differences in the sorting, ordering, understanding of numbers, time, and space and measurement concepts which were the sub-areas of mathematical concept development. This studied revealed that mathematical activity through a group game was more effective in developing those concepts than the activities with only paper and pencil using learning paper or doing no activity.
