The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between psychological family environment perceived by children , their self-concept and intrinsic motivation. The subjects of this study were sampled randomly 258 elementary school children of the sixth grade. They were selected from three elementary school in Daeguee area.
The instruments used in this study were a revised version of Jeong(1998)'s family environment inventory, Jeong (1966)'s self-concept scale and a scale of intrinsic versus extrinsic orientation in the classroom developed by Harter(1980).
The collected data were analyzed through SPSS/PC+ program and all atatistical values tested by t-test and Pearson's correlation.
The main research hypotheses of this study are as follows : 1. According to the perceived psychological family environment level, there will be significant differences of self-concept. 2. According to the self-concept level, there will be significant differences of intrinsic motivation. 3. According to the perceived psychological family environment level, there will be significant differences of intrinsic motivation. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1. According to the perceived psychological family environment level, there were significant differences of self-concept. Children from achieving family environment showed significant differences of affective, social and academic self concept. Children from open family environment showed significant differences of physiological, affective, social self concept. Children from intimate family environment showed significant differences of physiological and academic self concept. Children from autonomous environment showed significant differences of physiological, affective and social self concept. (p<.05, p<.01) 2. According to the self-concept level, there were significant differences of intrinsic motivation. Physiological, affective, social and academic self concept showed significant differences of all the subfactors of intrinsic motivation.(p<.01) 3. According to the perceived psychological family environment level, there were significant differences of intrinsic motivation. Children from achieving, intimate family environment showed significant differences of preference for challenge work and internal criteria for sucess/failure. Children from open environment showed significant differences of preference for challenge work, curiosity and interest and independent judgement. Children from autonomous environment showed significant differences of curiosity and interest and independent judgement. (p<.05, p<.01)
The above mentioned findings suggested that children were different from one another in self concept and intrinsic motivation according to psychological family environment perceived by themselves. Therefore, psychological family environment turned out to affect children's self concept and intrinsic motivation.
