As the disintegration of family increasing prevalent in modern society due to industrialization and urbanization, single parent families are expanding their scope to the mid-class as well as low income class. Mother's attitudes toward children play an important role for their entire life, and the role seems quite difficult to achieve in both single parent families and married parent families.
This study aims at defining the effects of single parent families on child-rearing after examining the parameters which make an influence on child-rearing attitudes of mothers of single parent families and married parent families.
A survey has been conducted for the target of single parent families and married parent families with children under age 11 living in Daejeon Metropolitan City. The instrument taken for the survey was the Maternal Behavior Research Instrument(MBRI) by Dr. Schaefer translated by Mr. Lee, won-young, and the SPSS 10.0 was taken for statistical analysis.
The summary of the survey is like the followings:
First, as far as the child-rearing attitudes of mothers of single parent families and married parent families are concerned, attitudes of mothers of single parent families were only influenced by age, the number of siblings, and education. On the other hand, attitudes of mothers of married parent families tend to be influenced by whether or not they have job and the level of monthly salary,
Second, though single parent families appeared to be more disapproval, it seemed more acceptable to say that other parameters are influential toward mothers' attitudes in child-rearing no matter what type of family children belong to. Taking the parameters of each subcategory of child-rearing attitudes into account, the affectionate child-rearing attitude seemed prominent in families with mothers of younger age, less siblings and high income; and the liberal child-rearing attitude seemed prevalent in families with higher education of mothers.
The followings are proposals based on the results of the study:
First, social understanding of single parent family should be more commonly acceptable. Therefore, it is most urgent that negative and snap-judgement on single parent family should be changed,
Second, differentiated social welfare services should be provided based on the parameters influential to child-rearing attitudes.
