This thesis is aimed at identifying proverbs related to animals, and it is especially focused on mammals, birds, fish or shellfish, dogs and cats. Proverbs including animals are likely to express people's bad temper compared to an animal's habit and specific character.
Peculiar sayings are found in Korea and Japan because of their environmental and geographical differences; there are sayings illustrating the movement and sound of birds, which represent weather, richness or failure in farming, earthquakes and fires. We are aware of our ancestor's interests, observation and insights in the proverbs.
In this thesis, proverbs regarding dogs and cats are going to be the main. At first, there are considerably lots of sayings related to dogs because dogs are regarded as one of the faithful animals. Some dogs like "Osoori" in Korea and "Hajji" in Japan appear in folk stories, but some dogs betray the human because they are, after all, a kind of animals. In addition, there are saying which reflect human's bad habits, compared to dog's wrong temper. Especially, there are also some sayings which show the irrationality and system of the society, the gap of the social position and the wealth and poverty in Korea and Japan.
In proverbs connected only to the dogs in Korea, people think that they are proud of dogs and that even dogs in a low environment can be clever. Jindo dog, for example, are famous for their brightness. In Korean traditional manners, there are reasons why Korean people eat dogs and religions in their ancestor's life.
In Japan, there is a proverb that dogs are better than Japanese warriors in satirical thoughts. Moreover, Japanese people consider dogs as lovely animals based on the saying that it is better to raise dogs than a grandson. From this sayings, we notice that Japanese people are cold-hearted in blood-relationships.
Secondly, the character of cats are described as follows: cats pretend to be gentle and are an uncanny things in regards to some sayings. In particular, there is a saying, that cats are compared to women's character.
In Korea, there are sayings which reflect people's frown expression. In addition, there is a proverb about a daughter-in-low who was treated inferiorly to cats. Through Japanese sayings, I become aware of Japanese society system and Japanese people's courteous manners as well as their cold-heartedness.
From some proverbs related to dogs and cats, we can know that dogs are preferable at people's touch than cats. Futhermore, cats are more independent and self-sufficient than any other animals. For this reason, Japanese people would like cats rather than dogs because their life style is similar to that of cats.
Although I am not able to find any proverbs that cats bring good luck, there aer not only some cats' dolls named "Manekineko" and "Kity" but also some cats' cartoons and animations named "ToTo" and "a witch's delivery" which indicate that cats bring good fortune. There is also a novel named "I am a cat", which shows that cats come with good luck. The reason that Japanese people prefer cats to dogs is for them to intrigued in cats' independence and self-support. Korean people, on the other hand, like dogs better than cats because dogs are more faithful than cats.
There may be some changes in the meaning of proverbs connected to dogs and cats if they are regarded as a lovely existence rather than just livestock, for proverbs are reflected on people's value and through in each age.
Through proverbs, we can learn about our ancestor's culture such as value, sarcasm, moral lesson and humor. Although there are a number of different features between in Korea and Japan, it will be very useful to teach cross-culture by using proverbs at this time when culture exchange is active in two countries.
