The purpose of this study was to serve as basis for better career education, by makind a comparative study of sith-grade students' career maturity in elementary school among large city, small city and urban aera, and by providing useful information for more rational career choice of elementary school children with poor career maturity and for better career guidance by teachers.
For attaining the purpose, the research questions were posed as follows:
First, what kind of difference is made by elementary school students' demographic variables to their career maturity ?
Second, was ind of difference is made by elementary school syudent's achievement to the their career maturity ?
The subjects of study were 300 sixth graders in elementry school.
Among them, 100 students were selected from elementary school in daejon, a large city, and 100 were selected from elementary school in gon-ju, middle city. And 100 were selected from elementary school in myen or smaller rural area I the city of yuen-gi.
The test instruments used in the study were song in sup's self-conept test and the career maturity test elementary student(1993) that the career maturity standard test(1988) made by jng suk min, et at, was modified by the kngwon eductional research institute.
The colleted data were handled by t-test, f-test and correlation analysis, and sas(statistical analysis system) was used for data analysis.
The findings of study were as follows:
First, as result of comparing elemntary school students' career maturity with one another by demographic variables, students in the city of daejon and gon-ju had more rational career pattern than those in the rural area in the city of yuen-gi.
The students in rural area showed more extempoary career pattern.
As for career attitude, students ih the city of gong-ju the best career attitude, by gender, the career attitude of girl students more positive than that of boy students.
Concering career competence, the collective average of students in gong-ju was higher than that of students in yeun-gi.
The girl students had better career competence than students.
As for socioeconomic was family circumstance, those whose socioeconomic family circumstance was better tended to have more rational career pattern, and their career attitude and career competence were better as well.
Second, as a result of analyzing the relationship of self-concept with career maturity, self-concept had some relation to career attitude and career competence.
Regarding the impact of self-concept on career maturity, general self-concept exerted a significant influence on general career attitude and genearl career competence.
The abvove-mentioned findings suggested that the career maturity of elementary school students was different according to demographic varables, including residential area, gender and socioeconomic family circumstance.
Also, their achievement made a difference to their career maturity, and there was a significnt relationship betwen self-concept and career maturity.
There was, accordingly, a need to develop and apply diverse career sducation programs for elementary school students.
As the scope of this study was confined to some sixth-grade students in elementary school, more studies should be conducted for different and different regions.
