The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the type of elders' leisure activities and life satisfaction and to identify the effects of elders' leisure activities on life satisfaction.
For the purpose, this study conducted a survey of 60-year old or older people who were participating in leisure activities based on general social welfare centers and elders' colleges in Daejeon. The survey covered largely four areas, which were the tendency of elders' participation in leisure activities, the relationships between elders' general characteristics and their leisure activities, between elders' general characteristics and life satisfaction, and between elders' leisure activities and life satisfaction. The research aimed to produce basic data for classifying the types of elders' leisure activities and understanding factors influencing elders' leisure activities and life satisfaction, and ultimately to improve the life satisfaction of elders who are participating in leisure activities.
In the survey, 240 questionnaires were recovered and analyzed. The results of analysis are as follows;
First, as for the general characteristics of elders studied in this research, participation in leisure activities was higher in female elders than male ones and it was most active in elders aged between 60~69. A majority of the subjects were middle school or high school dropouts or graduates, and were Christians. In addition, 60% of the subjects were living with their spouse alive, and 70.4% had a high standard of living. As for the condition of health, 41.7% of the respondents replied 'Healthy'.
Second, as for the tendency of elders' participation in leisure activities, the percentage of hobby activities was highest as 2.29. As a part of hobby activities, most elders were found to watch the TV four or more times a week. The percentage of health activities was 1.86, religious activities 1.57, learning activities 1.37, viewing and appreciation activities 1.27 and voluntary activities 1.14, which was lowest.
Third, as for the relationship between elders' general characteristics and their leisure activities, significant difference was found in health activities, religious activities, hobby activities and viewing and appreciation activities according to gender, in learning activities and religious activities according to age, in health activities, learning activities and viewing and appreciation activities according to academic qualification, in religious activities and voluntary activities according to religion, in health activities and voluntary activities according to the being alive of the spouse, health activities, learning activities and viewing and appreciation activities according to living standard, in health activities and learning activities, hobby activities according to average income, in health activities, learning activities, religious activities, voluntary activities and viewing and appreciation activities according to health condition, and in health activities according to the children's preference.
Fourth, as for the relationship between elders' general characteristics and life satisfaction, life satisfaction appeared to be high in elders who were 60~69-year-old female middle or high school dropouts or graduates, lived with the spouse alive, were economically comfortable, had monthly income of 400,000~490,000 won, were healthy, and contacted with their children around three times a week.
Fifth, as for the effects of the type of elders' leisure activities on life satisfaction, health activities and religious activities appeared to affect elders' life satisfaction according to the result of correlation analysis, and gender, age and health activities appeared to affect elders' life satisfaction according to the result of multiple regression analysis.
