The purpose of this study was to explore causal model of personal(child's self-esteem, child's internal locus of control) and maternal variables(mother's depression, mother's personality-oriented control, and mother's self-control) on elementary child's self-control by child's sex. The relative effect of personal and maternal variables on children's self-control was examined by child's sex. And the interaction effect of personal and maternal variables on children's self-control was tested by child's sex.
The subjects were 538 children and their mothers who selected from 2th, 4th and 6th grade of elementary school in Pusan. For data analysis, Cronbach' α, multiple regression, pearson correlation coefficients were used. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 program.
The major findings of this study were as follows;
1. Child's internal locus of control, child's self-esteem, mother's depression, mother's personality-oriented control, and mother's self-control was significant predicted children's self-control. Child's internal locus of control had a first direct effect on children's self-control.
2. The effect of personal and maternal variables on children's self-control was different depending on child's sex. For boys, child's internal locus of control, mother's self-control, mother's personality-oriented control, and child's self-esteem was significant predicted boy's self-control. Child's internal locus of control had a first direct effect on boy's self-control. For girls, mother's self-control, child's internal locus of control, mother's depression, child's self-esteem and mother's personality-oriented control was significant predicted girl's self-control. Mother's self-control had a first direct effect on girl's self-control.
3. Mother's self-control and mother's personality-oriented control had a direct and indirect effect through child's internal locus of control and self-esteem on child's self-control.
Mother's depression had a direct effect on children's self-control.
4. The causal model of personal and maternal variables on children's self-control was different depending on child's sex. For boys, Mother's self-control had a direct and indirect effect through self-esteem on child's self-control and mother's personality-oriented control had a direct and indirect effect through boy's internal locus of control on boy's self-control. For girls, Mother's self-control had a direct and indirect effect through girl's internal locus of control and self-esteem on girl's self-control.
Mother's personality-oriented control had a direct and indirect effect through girl's self-esteem on girl's self-control. But mother's depression had only a direct effect on girl's self-control.
