수륙재 전승의 지역적 다양성과 의미 = Local Diversity and Meaning of the Inheritance of Suryukjae (Buddhist Ritual of Consoling the Spirit of the Dead)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 불교의 대표적인 의례인 수륙재의 다양한 전승 양상을 살펴보고 그 의미를 제시한 글이다. 여러 사찰에 설행된 수륙재 중 서울 은평구의 진관사 수륙재, 강원 동해시의 삼화사 수륙재, 창원 합포구의 백운사 수륙재를 대상으로 했다. 먼저 수륙재의 재차를 중심으로 공통된 재차와 특징적인 재차를 살펴보았다. 그리하여 서울 진관사 수륙재가 수륙재 설행의 정당성을 강조하고 있으며 이는 엄정하고 제의성을 강조하는 서울 지역의 무속과 상통한다고 보았다. 동해 삼화사 수륙재는 해양문화와 긴밀한 관련성을 가지면서 〈방생〉의식을 두드러지게 내세운다고 보았다. 마산 백운사 수륙재는 곧장 영가의 천도를 강조하는 28고혼청을 앞세우면서 다른 두 사찰에서 국행이나 왕실의 성격을 강조하는 것과는 달리 민간 중심의 수륙재일 가능성을 내세웠다. 특히 이 지역에서 두드러진 망자천도굿이 행하지 않고 있음을 들어, 수륙재가 첫머리에 고혼청을 내세움으로써 이러한 부족을 어느 정도 해소한 것으로 보았다. 따라서 불교 수륙재는 불교의례로 존재하고 있으면서도 각 지역의 문화와 긴밀하게 연결되어 있다. 앞으로 전국 수륙재의 실상을 파악하고 그를 바탕으로 수륙재의 지역적 위상 및 분포, 의미를 좀더 정밀하게 살펴보아야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article looked into the various inheritance patterns of Suryukjae, which is a representative ceremonial ritual of Buddhism, and proposed meanings. Among Suryukjae, which has been performed in many Buddhist temples, this article aimed at Jingwansa Suryukjae in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, Samhwasa Suryukjae in Donghae-si, Gangwon, and Baegunsa Suryukjae in Happo-gu, Changwon. First the article looked into the common Jaecha and characteristic Jaecha focusing on the Jaecha of Suryukjae. As a result, the article viewed that Jingwansa Suryukjae in Seoul emphasized the legitimacy of the performance of Suryukjae, and this matches shamanism in the Seoul region where shamanism is adhered to strictly and emphasizes a ritual attribute. Samhwasa Suryukjae in Donghae was regarded as obviously emphasizing the ceremony of “the release of captive animals” while having a close relationship with marine culture.
Baegunsa Suryukjae in Masan lays an emphasis on the possibility of people-oriented Suryukjae while stressing 28 Gohoncheong which emphasized Cheondo (leading of th dead to the other world) of a spiritual. In particular, there was no notable Cheondo Gut performed in this region, and it appeared to resolve this lack by emphasizing Gohoncheong (summoning the spirit of the dead) in the beginning. Accordingly Buddhist Suryukjae is closely related to the culture of each region although it still exists as a Buddhist ritual ceremony. In the future, it is necessary to identify the reality of Suryukjae nationwide, and to take a look into its local status, distribution, and meaning based on such identification.
