Picture books to meet the article text and pictures completes an art form with symbol of mutual organic relationship or narration. For the article text as a component of picture book illustration representative picture book author Maira Kalman's work were analyzed in terms of the basic components of the visual form. Components of visual form defined as points, lines, planes, and typography in Kalman's work examined these three basic elements. Kalman's work to analyze the points of the visual representation of the elements, line and direction, surface, shape, pattern, depth and illusion, texture segmentation, and specifically the line direction, form, texture, pattern, and a visual representation, depth and sense of movement, tone to the split. Omitted the dots and lines that are versatile and redundant elements main category conception and divided into abstract shapes and typography of a formative usability is analyzed. Kalman's typography expressed by a wide variety of techniques has the features granular criteria. Typography in his picture book illustrations of representation is one of these elements as representing the figurative representation of the form, such as shape, according to the contents of the line, or texture, contrast, and directionality are. Appeared in the work of Maira Kalman typography, the typography is simply information transfer using visual symbols and can be interpreted as a formative rather than make the composition come alive. 국문 초록 (Abstract)

그림책은 글텍스트와 이미지텍스트인 일러스트레이션이 만나서 상호 유기적인 관계성을 가지고 하나의 상징 또는 서술을 완성해 나가는 예술형식이다. 그램책의 글텍스트를 일러스트레이션을 위한 구성요소로, 대표적인 그림책 작가인 마이라 칼만의 작품을 시각형태의 기초구성요소 측면에서 분석하였다. 시각형태의 구성요소를 점･선･면으로 정의하고, 칼만의 작품 속 타이포그래피를 이 세 가지 기본요소를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 칼만의 작품을 분석하는데 점의 경우 시각표현 요소, 선과 방향, 면, 형태, 패턴, 깊이와 착시, 질감으로 세분화 했으며, 선은 구체적으로 방향, 형태, 질감, 패턴, 시각적 표현, 깊이와 운동감, 명암으로 나누었다. 면은 점과 선의 쓰임새와 중복되는 요소들은 생략하고 대분류로 구상과 추상적 형태로 나누어 타이포그래피의 조형적 활용성을 분석하였다. 세분화된 기준에 의해 칼만의 타이포그래피 표현기법은 매우 다양한 특징을 지니고 있다. 그의 그림책에서 타이포그래피를 일러스트레이션의 표현 방법들 중의 하나로 조형적인 점, 선, 면처럼 내용에 따른 형태를 표현하거나 질감, 명암, 방향성 등을 나타내는 요소로 사용하여 전체적인 조형성을 완성하였다. 마이라 칼만의 작품에 나타난 타이포그래피는 타이포그래피가 단순히 정보 전달이 아니라 시각적 기호로 해석이 가능하며 조형을 이용한 구성은 화면을 생동감 있게 만들고 있음을 알 수 있다. 글텍스트가 이야기를 서술하는 글의 언어적 기능 뿐 아니라 시각적으로 화면을 구성하는 표현요소로 활발히 사용되어 화면의 조형성과 서술성을 풍성하게 하였으며, 문학과 미술의 독특한 결합체인 그림책의 가치를 더욱 높여주고 있다.
