조형요소로서의 타이포그래피에 있어서 리듬의 감성표현에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

타이포그래피에서 고정적인 활자의 선택과 상투적인 배열로 습관적인 작업을 하는 것은 언어와 이미지를 근간으로 하여 의사소통과 미적 효용성을 지니는 타이포그래피의 의미를 제대로 파악하지 못한 데서 비롯된 것이다. 따라서 이 연구는 타이포그래피 표현방법의 무한한 다양성과 가능성을 모색하기 위해 구별된 형태, 균형 잡힌 모습, 배치를 의미하는 특별한 배열인 ‘리듬’에 기초하여 타이포그래피의 의미를 짚어보았다. 아울러 타이포그래피에서 리듬이 일어나는 과정을 활자의 조형요소와 리듬의 형식원리로 보고, 이에 나타나는 속성을 구분하였으며, 이러한 리듬을 감성표현으로 보는 관점을 제안하였다. 이는 타이포그래피 리듬의 감성표현이 곧 시선을 유도하는 시각적 리듬으로 어떠한 과정을 거쳐 생성되고 수용되는지를 구조적으로 보여줄 수 있는 방법이기 때문이다. 나아가 타이포그래피 리듬의 감성이 활자의 조형적 요소와 배열 사이의 관계에 따라 형성되고 또한 발현된다는 점에서 타이포그래피의 넓은 활자의 영역 가운데 활자의 조형적 표현에 한정하여 타이포그래피의 감성표현에 관하여 고찰하였다.
이를 위해서는 먼저 타이포그래피에서 나타나는 리듬의 특성을 아는 것이 필요하다. 타이포그래피에서 리듬은 각 요소들을 배치했을 때 일어나는 진행의 힘과 시선을 끌게 하는 힘으로 존재하는 시각적인 움직임이다. 이러한 리듬은 타이포그래피에서 활자의 조형요소와 리듬의 형식, 즉 배열에 따라 효과적으로 정보를 전달하며 동시에 감성을 표현한다.
타이포그래피에서 감성표현은 시각적 리듬이 쾌·불쾌와 같은 심적 운동을 가지고 감정 또는 정서를 불러일으키며 마음속에 생명을 가진 별도의 형(形)을 이루는 것이다. 이러한 리듬의 감성표현은 타이포그래피가 매체의 발달로 인해 대량생산되고, 풍요로워짐에 따라 내용을 기록하는 시대에서 감성이 가치 있는 시대로 바뀐 것에 주목하며, 타이포그래피에 있어서 효과적인 정보전달을 하는 기능적 역할과 감성표현의 정서적 역할을 다하게 된다. 또한 타이포그래피 그 자체가 감성을 추구하는 것은 정보전달의 목적을 두고 즐거움을 창출하는 타이포그래퍼의 태도에도 영향을 미친다.
그렇다면, 타이포그래피에서 리듬의 감성은 어떤 유형으로 나타나는가?
타이포그래피의 공간은 하나의 네거티브한 형(形)으로 인식되며 활자의 형태를 공간에 배열하는 것은 무수히 많은 규칙이 존재하기 때문에 일일이 규정하기 매우 어렵다. 그러므로 이 연구에서는 타이포그래피의 조형요소를 크게 활자의 형태와 색채로 보고 이것을 다루는 방식으로 ‘형식’의 관점에서 바라보았다. 타이포그래피의 ‘형식’은 부분들의 배열과 구성요소들의 상호관계를 의미하며 리듬의 형식원리인 반복, 조화, 대비와 동의어가 되는 것이다. 따라서 타이포그래피 리듬의 감성표현을 활자의 형태와 색채 그리고 형식원리인 배열에 따라 분석한 결과 캐주얼(casual)한 리듬감, 내츄럴(natural)한 리듬감, 클리어(clear)한 리듬감, 엘레강스(elegant)한 리듬감, 모던(modern)한 리듬감, 다이나믹(dynamic)한 리듬감과 같은 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.
연구자는 이 연구를 통해 타이포그래피 본질의 중요성을 다시 한 번 강조하는 계기를 마련하고자 하였고, 이 연구를 초석으로 타이포그래피에서 보다 새로운 변화가 이루어지길 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

It is just because people do not comprehend a true meaning of typography that contains usefulness of communication and Aesthetic-Utility based on a language and an image to do a habitual work by choosing constant letters and arranging it conventionally in typography. Therefore this study examines the meaning of typography based on a distinct forms, a balance and a disposition mean special arrangement ‘Rhythm’, to seek indefinite versatility and possibility of expression method of typography. In addition, I suggest my standpoint of view to consider rhythm as an sensibility expression while I analyze the process rhythm is occurred in typography in formative elements of letters and formal principles of rhythm. It is because this methodology can demonstrate structurally how an sensibility expression of typographic rhythm is generated into visual rhythm attracting people’s sight instantly and accepted by the people. Furthermore I contemplate on an sensibility expression of typography being specially limited to formative expression of typography in a wide scope of letters in typography in view that rhythmic emotion of typography is formed and revealed by the relations between formative elements of letters and arrangement.
To do this, it is mostly required to comprehend characteristics of rhythm appeared in typography. Rhythm in typography means a visual movement subsisting as power to proceed and to attract a sight occurring when each element is placed. This rhythm conveys information efficiently and express emotion simultaneously in conformity to the formative elements of letters and the form of rhythm in typography, i.e. arrangement.
Sensibility expression in typography makes a separate image in mind having life while visual rhythm with mental action such as pleasure and/or displeasure provokes emotion and feeling. This sensibility expression of rhythm focuses on the change of time from recording contents to emotion is valuable as typography is mass produced and affluent due to development of media. It also plays its efficient functional role of conveying information and an sensational role of sensibility expression in typography. Also the fact that typography itself pursues emotion influences an attitude of a typographer creating pleasure for the purpose of conveying information.
Then in which type is rhythmic emotion of typography represented?
It is very complicated to describe in detail as a space of typography is recognized as a negative shape and there are countless rules in arrangement of forms in letters into the space. therefore in this study, I consider formative elements of typography mainly in forms and colors of letters and deal with these elements in terms of form. The ‘form’ of typography means arrangement of parts and interaction of composing elements and has the same meaning with repetition, harmony and contrast which are formal principles of rhythm. Therefore as a result of analysis of sensibility expression of rhythm on the typography that is done by forms, colors and arrangement, a formal principle of letters, I can come up with casual rhythmic sense, natural rhythmic sense, clear rhythmic sense, elegant rhythmic sense, modern rhythmic sense and dynamic rhythmic sense.
The researcher tries to make an opportunity to emphasize the importance of nature of typography once again from this study and looks forward to a new change in typography based on this study.
