분황사 모전석탑의 양식 기원에 대한 고찰 = A Study on the origin of the style of Bunhwangsa stupa that was made by stone bricks

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Bunhwangsa stupa was first stone stupa on Shilla’s history. This stupa was studied from Japanese colonial era by many scholars. However the studies about Bunhwangsa stupa still have many questions. Until now, most studies about Bunhwangsa said about the building materials which were stone bricks and the stupa’s roof that have stairs shape on the roof top. Because of these reason, most scholars have been thought that Bunhwangsa stupa was influenced by Chinese brick pagoda.
In this article, I raised a question about this general theory. To answer my question, I proceeded a comparison study with the Four Gates pagoda(611) in Sintongsa at China with Bunhwangsa stupa. Both pagoda have two things in common. Those are made by stone and have four gates. Although those pagodas have two things in common, also those pagodas have many different styles.
In my opinion, the Four Gates pagoda in Sintongsa is not a stupa that was made by stone bricks(模塼石塔) because, the stones built the Four Gates pagoda are bigger than general bricks. Also, the Four Gates pagoda carried on the traditional style which is the pavilion style pagodas were made in northern wei dynasty(北魏). On the contrary Bunhwangsa stupa followed stone pagodas tradition of Shilla that was originated woden building.
In this article, I proceeded another comparison study. I compared Bunhwangsa stupa with Sungaksa fifteen story pagoda(523) and Bupwangsa fifteen story pagoda(602) in china. The results show that Bunhwangsa stupa have different style compare with those chinese pagodas.
Those chinese pagodas that were studied in the article were built by chines ability and their view of stupa. As such Bunhwangsa stupa built by Shilla people’s cultural ability about building pagoda and their view of stupa. I think that Shilla might be imported the motive about stupa but they built different style stupa. In conclusion, I could show that Bunhwangsa stupa was not influenced by Chinese brick pagoda. The first stone stupa on Shilla’s history might be influenced by Indian style stupa
