다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The division of the Korean peninsula was an international political event that was affected by the Cold War strongly. However, the cause analysis of the Cold War era had limitations because of the absence of the Soviet documents. Therefore, this study tries to explain the causes of the Korean peninsula division using the Soviet documents, past studies and Waltz`s theoretical approach. The analysis by the first image factor shows that the perception and policy of the leaders in the United States and the Soviet Union had a greater impact on the division of the Korean peninsula than theirs of the leaders of the Korean. Ideology, the factor of the second image, also affected the division of the Korean peninsula to some extent. The conflict between America and Soviet Union on the American-Soviet Joint Commission negatively affected the Korean peninsula. Soviet documents also show that the Soviet Union had a strong influence on the failure of the Left-Right Coalition. The factor of the third image, the interrelation of the United States and the Soviet Union, also had a significant impact on the division of the Korean peninsula. The aggravation of the Cold War resulted in the two nations, the United States and the Soviet Union, using the containment policy and the expansion strategy respectively in Europe and Northeast Asia. Its aftermath played an enormous role in the division of the Korean peninsula.
