Hope is a cognitive-motivational state that provides people in poverty with positive thoughts about themselves and their everyday life tasks, which enable them to sustain a sense of well-being. This study investigated the relationships that hope has either with positive emotions as a personal resource or depression representing distress; and explored both mediating role of the family support in the relationship between positive emotions and hope and its moderating role between depression and hope. This study was based on data with 254 adult participants in community workfare programs living under(and on the margin of the) poverty line. Major findings were: 1) participants experienced low to moderate levels of both depression and positive emotions, each of these showed significant relationships with both family support and hope. 2) Family support played a partial mediating role between positive emotions and hope; this result informed that both positive emotions and family support enhanced the participants` will to live a better life and motivated them to attain it. Also family support moderated the negative influence of depression on hope. Unexpectedly, the graph based on the regression analysis for the moderating role of family support demonstrated that participants with a higher level of family support showed a stronger negative association between depression and hope, compared to participants with a lower level of family support. These results are in the similar line with previous findings for the mediating and moderating roles of family support on well-being of people with socioeconomic vulnerabilities. Finally this study suggested some implications for social work practice to enhance hope and to strengthen family relationships and functioning for those in low-income.
