성폭력 상담자의 대리 외상 경험에 대한 질적 연구 = Counselors' Vicarious Trauma Experience from Working with Victims of Sexual Violence

Using aqualitative methodology, this study aimed to explore the vicarious trauma experience of counselors working with victims of sexual violence. Eleven counselors who work with victims of sexual violence participated in Focus Group Interviews. The analysis of the protocols suggested that the counselors experienced body symptoms and negative feelings that are similar to the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. They also reported discontinued or abridged interpersonal relationships, distrust in others, difficulties in sex life, heightened sensitivity to child care, and changes in cognitive schema. However, the resultsindicated that they had also positive experiences such as respect for inner strengthsof their clients. Implications of the study were discussed in the Korean sociocultural context where counseling services for victims of sexual violence are provided.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 국내 성폭력 상담자들의 대리 외상 경험의 실체를 파악하고 그에 따른 개입 전략들을 개발하는데 필요한 기초 자료를 수집하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위하여 성폭력 상담자로 활동하고 있는 11명을 대상으로 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 실시하고 그 내용을 분석하였다. 연구 결과 성폭력 상담자들은 상담 과정에서 외상후스트레스장애와 유사한 신체적 증상 및 부정적인 정서를 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 경험에 지속적으로 노출된 결과 대인관계가 단절되거나 축소되고, 타인에 대한 불신감이 높아지고, 부부 성생활에서 어려움이 있거나, 자녀 양육에서 지나치게 성적 자극에 예민해지는 등 관계 영역에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 무엇보다 인간 존재의 파괴성 및 공격성에 회의감을 느끼고, 남성에 대한 적대감이 고조되는 동시에 사회적으로 취약한 존재로서의 여성과 동일시하고, 사회 안전 시스템에 대한 불신이 깊어지고, 사회 정의 및 가치관에서 심한 혼란을 겪는 등 인지 구조적인 영역에서 심각한 변화를 나타냈다. 그러나 외상 상담 과정에서 부정적인 경험만 하는 것은 아니었다. 성폭력 상담자들은 자신을 보호하기 위한 다양한 대처 전략들을 사용하고 있었는데, 특히 일의 의미 발견, 피해자의 내면적 힘과 삶의 용기에 대한 경외감, 사회 운동에의 적극적인 참여 등 긍정적인 측면에서 변화가 있었다는 점은 주목할 만하다. 이러한 결과들을 국내 성폭력 상담계의 사회문화적인 특성과 관련지어 논의하였다. 마지막으로 연구의 제한점과 후속 연구에 대한 제언들을 제시하였다.
