The Dasol Temple days of Kim Dong-ni so far cannot be separable from his life, but a chronology of his life has not been well-established yet. In this study, I took a detailed look at Dasol Temple days depending on the memoir of Kim Dong-ni, Choi Beomsul, Jo Yeon-hyeon and other people. Kim Dong-ni started to stay at Dasol Temple from 1935, later would visit Haein Temple, Seoul and Gyoungju, and escaped to Ssanggye Temple. However, until December in 1945, he had spent about 9 years in and around Dasol Temple. There he met a countless number of people such as Kim Jong-taek, Seol Seog-u, Jo Yeon-hyeon, Choi Beom-sul, Choi In-uk, Han Yong-un, and Heo Min. He also created “Hwang-toh-gi” and Solgeo trilogy. Additionally, he wrote many works, such as “Snowy Afternoon”, “Deungsinbul”, “Magpie Noise”, “Jeoseungsae” and “Birds-of-Paradise” on the experiences of Dasol Temple days.
Meanwhile, in this study, I examined Kim Dong-ni’s tendency of anarchism originated from his Dasol Temple days. Although Kim Dong-ni did not mention strongly about it at ordinary times, he depicted Shin Chae-ho’s anarchistic tendency in his work in 1936. Kim Dong-ni seemed to regard that tendency as the common ground between two of them.
In “The Leader of Freedom”, he showed his image absorbed in anarchism. We assume that that is because he met anarchism and anarchists during Dasol Temple days. In this regard, more profound studies are needed, and the tendency of anarchism in Kim Dong-ni’s literature is required to be examined in detail. The fact that the anarchism inside Kim Dong-ni was embedded even in “Hwang-toh-gi” is undeniable. This study merely investigated its clue, but I hope we will deepen this discussion afterwards.
