Since 2008, the government of the Republic of Korea started to run the “Study in Korea” project in order to globalize education. As a result of the project, the government effectively enhanced and expanded the programs that would help to increase and maintain the number of foreign students in Korea. In January, 2017, the total number of foreign students in Korea was approximately 123,192 students’ majority of who were Chinese students (69,413). Vietnamese students ranked second at 15,771 students. In Korea, a lot of research has been done about foreign students but most of the time these studies are much focused on Chinese students. This thesis will provide some methods to adapt to the new education atmosphere which is inclusive for increasing population of Vietnamese students. This study was conducted through interviews that inquired the reasons why they chose Korea as their destination for overseas study, difficulties they encountered during their study period and how they have gotten over those obstacles. During the progress of survey, significant changes and positive study plans of Vietnamese students in Korea was seen clearly. The survey included questions related to matters of study, experiences in day to day life, use of leisure time and future plan after completion of their studies in Korea.

Phan, Hoang Tri Thuc

        RANK : 247327

This study investigates the local involvement in tourism activities and rural development of Phung sand dunes in the lower Mekong region, a remote rural community in Vietnam. This thesis focuses on village participation in tourism employment considering rural development and rural transformation process, rather than exploring community participation in tourism planning as other studies do. The qualitative research method consisted of archive research and direct village participant observation, and in-depth local interviews were conducted with a total of 35 people, including 32 villagers and 3 officials. The results of the survey are as the follows. In general, local villagers participate in tourism activities in three forms: direct subscription, indirect subscription, and non-intervention. Although tourism has developed for many years, it is evaluated that only a small number of villagers and local households directly subscribe because they directly provide services for tourists such as accommodation and transportation. These directly related households are part of a community-based tourism program established to bring local tourism businesses together and support each other. The majority of locals and local families in Phung Dunes participate indirectly and indifferently in tourism activities, reflecting the low level of participation in tourism employment in Phung Dunes. Differences in social relationships in the form of family and kin networks (related to internal social networks) and the combination of social capital are likely to be decisive factors preventing the majority of local residents from participating in tourism activities. Tourism provides both financial and non-financial benefits to regional development, highlighting the role of tourism in diversifying rural occupations and rural income in the process of rural change. However, the benefits of tourism development are clearly distributed among the local villagers, resulting in an imbalance in the standard of living among each group in the village. Most of the benefits go to families who directly participate in tourism activities by running their own businesses, such as homestays, restaurants and transportation services. Meanwhile, local residents who do not engage in tourism or indirectly participate in tourism experience greater vulnerability due to unsustainable sources of income, lack of savings and geographic isolation. These results raise concerns about inclusive development in rural areas of the Phung Dunes and other developing countries.
