This study aimed to explore public views on disclosure of tobacco components in an effort to develop a comprehensive regulatory system facilitating implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Articles 9 and 10 in Korea. In all, 1200 representative Koreans 19 years old or older were enrolled and information on their general characteristics, smoking status, awareness of the effects of smoking on health, and views on the public disclosure of tobacco components was collected by telephone using a structured questionnaire. Factors associated with acceptance of the need for public disclosure of tobacco components were identified via multivariate analysis. Most participants considered it necessary to publicly disclose tobacco components (95.9%) and were aware of the risk to health posed by smoking (76.0%). The prevalent view was that tobacco companies should be legally required to publicly disclose details of the components of cigarettes, their levels per cigarette, and their effects on health. The most effective means of disclosure were considered to be the mass media, printed materials, and labels on cigarette packs. Females and never-smokers (odds ratio [OR]: 4.39, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.76-10.94) more readily accepted the need for public disclosure, whereas those of lower educational level and/or who were less aware of the harm to health posed by smoking (OR: 0.05, 95% CI: 0.01-0.18) were less likely to be accepting. The attitude of the general population ensures that FCTC Articles 9 and 10 will be successfully implemented in Korea. Further public consultation on the details of disclosure would be useful for the development of a comprehensive regulatory system.

Adjuvant chemotherapy could provide little benefit to postmenopausal patients with luminal A, node-positive breast cancer, and endocrine therapy alone may help reduce morbidity. Future studies with a large number of patients and longer follow-up time are necessary to determine whether chemotherapy might be avoided in this patient population.

ABSTRACT: Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients has a high short-term mortality. Identification of effective models to predict the short-term mortality may enable early intervention and improve patients’ prognosis. We aim to assess the performance of the CLIF Consortium Organ Failure score (CLIF-C OFs), CLIF sequential organ failure assessment score (CLIF-SOFAs), CLIF Consortium ACLF score (CLIF-C ACLFs), ACLF grade, and model for end-stage liver disease score (MELDs) in predicting the short-term mortality in CHB patients with ACLF.Among the 155 consecutive adult patients with liver failure as a discharge diagnosis were screened, and all the patients were treated at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University (Shanghai, China) from January 2010 to February 2016. The diagnosis of ACLF was based on the criteria formalized by the ACLF consensus recommendations of the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL). Diagnostic accuracy for predicting short-term (28-day) mortality was calculated for CLIF-C OFs, CLIF-SOFAs, CLIF-C ACLFs, ACLF grade, and MELDs in all patients. One hundred fifty-five consecutive adult liver failure patients were screened and 85 patients including 73 males and 12 females were enrolled. Overall, the 28-day transplant-free mortality was 32% in all patients, and 100% in those with severe early course (ACLF-3). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of CLIF-C OFs (AUROC: 0.906, P = .0306, compared with MELDs) was higher than those of CLIF-SOFAs (AUROC: 0.876), CLIF-C ACLFs (AUROC: 0.858), ACLF grade (AUROC: 0.857), and MELDs (AUROC: 0.838) for predicting short-term mortality. The cut-point for baseline CLIF-C OFs in predicting death was 8.5, with 67% sensitivity, 90% specificity, and AUROC of 0.906 (95% CI: 0.8450–0.9679).The results indicate that short-term mortality is high in patients with ACLF and CLIF Consortium Organ Failure score is superior to MELD, CLIF SOFA, and CLIF-C ACLF in predicting its short-term mortality.

This study showed a profile of eQTLs for the genes involved in the PI3K/AKT pathway using a healthy population, revealing 73 eQTLs associated with expression of multiple genes. They might be candidates of common variants in predicting genetic susceptibility to cancer and in targeting cancer therapy. Further studies are required to examine their underlying mechanisms for regulating expression of the genes.

Circulating blood counts showed significant correlation to tumor FDG uptake in early stage NSCLC. WBC count was a significant univariate variable, but tumor FDG uptake was a superior and independent predictor of outcome. Hence, tumor FDG uptake effectively stratified prognosis in patients with low as well as high WBC count.

ABSTRACT: Serratus anterior muscle weakness causes scapular winging, characterized by scapular downward rotation and scapular anterior tipping in the resting position. Knee push-up plus (KPP), a modified push-up plus that is generally used in early rehabilitation programs, is performed to elicit SA activation. However, excessive thoracic kyphosis can easily occur as a compensatory movement during KPP. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effect of tactile cues during KPP on activities of the thoracic erector spinae, rectus abdominis, lower trapezius, serratus anterior, and upper trapezius; scapular winging; and thoracic kyphosis in subjects with scapular winging.Thirteen men with scapular winging performed KPP exercises under 3 different tactile cue conditions (no cue, to the thoracic spinous process [TSP], and to the interscapular region [ISR]). Electromyography was used to collect the muscle activity; in addition, a scapulometer and ImageJ software were used to measure the amount of scapular winging and thoracic kyphosis, respectively. One-way repeated-measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni correction were used to assess for statistical significance. The activity of the thoracic erector spinae, rectus abdominis, serratus anterior, and upper trapezius had significant difference among three conditions (P < .05). Lower trapezius activity was no significantly different among 3 conditions. Degrees of scapular winging and thoracic kyphosis had also significant difference among 3 conditions (P < .05).These results suggest that the tactile cue to the TSP and ISR in KPP exercise can be an effective method for decreasing scapular winging as well as correcting compensatory thoracic kyphosis during the KPP in subjects with scapular winging.
