In this paper, structural identification of a cable-stayed bridge under back-to-back typhoons is performed using vibration responses measured by a wireless sensor system. Firstly, a cable-stayed bridge with the wireless monitoring system is described. Wireless vibration sensor nodes are utilized to measure accelerations from the deck, pylon and stay cables of the bridge. Secondly, dynamic responses of the cable-stayed bridge under the attack of two consecutive typhoons, Bolaven and Tembin, are analyzed under various wind speeds. Stochastic subspace identification method and short-time Fourier transform analysis are selected to examine wind-induced variations of the bridge's responses based on the field measurements under the two typhoons. Finally, the structural identification of the bridge is performed under various wind velocities to examine the typhoon-induced variations of the bridge's structural properties. The variations of dynamic characteristics due to the typhoons are turned into the changes of the bridge's stiffness (or flexibility) via the fine-tuning process.

This paper proposes a new visual tracking framework and demonstrates its merits via mobile robot experiments. An image sequence from the vision system of a mobile robot is not static when a mobile robot is moving, since slipping and vibration occur. These problems cause image blurring. Therefore, in this paper, we address the problem of robust object tracking under blurring and introduce a novel robust visual tracking framework based on the arbitration of the AdaBoost-based detection method and the appearance-based detection method to overcome the blurring problem. The proposed framework consists of three parts: (1) distortion error compensation and feature extraction using the Modified Discrete Gaussian-Hermite Moment (MDGHM) and fuzzy-based distortion error compensation, (2) object detection using arbitration of appearance- and feature-based object detection, and (3) object tracking using a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed framework, mobile robot visual tracking experiments are carried out. The results show that the proposed framework is more robust against blurring than the conventional feature- and appearance-based methods.
Resolver angle estimation using parameter and state estimation
Han, S.,Han, S. Published for IMEKO by the Institute of Measuremen 2016 MEASUREMENT -LONDON- Vol.93 No.-
In this paper, a new type of a resolver angle estimator that utilizes a combined parameter and state estimation scheme is proposed. A state-space model of a resolver is first developed with unknown parameters. Least square estimation is employed to obtain some unknown model parameters by using the measurements up to the current time. Based on the state-space model with estimated parameters, a constrained state estimator with finite memory is constructed to estimate the resolver angle. It is shown through simulation that the proposed scheme is very effective in suppressing noise and overcoming amplitude and phase imbalances compared with common angle tracking observers.

We have recently developed very precise carbon-interspaced antiscatter grids having a wide range of grid strip densities (i.e., 85-234lines/in.) by adopting the sawing process, depending on the demands of specific imaging modalities. However, because grid strips of the recently developed grids are mostly invisible through X-ray nondestructive testing due to their high strip densities, quality assurance in the manufacturing has not yet satisfactorily made. In this work, we proposed a pragmatic method to measure actual grid strip densities over the Nyquist sampling rate based on the moire pattern analysis. We prepared several samples of the carbon-interspaced grids having nominal grid strip densities of 85, 103, 130, 150, 178, 203, 215, and 234lines/in. and measured their strip densities by using the proposed method to demonstrate its viability assessment. The differences between the nominal and the measured grid strip densities were less than about 1.8%, indicating the proposed method is useful for the quality assurance in grid manufacturing.
Measurement of capacitance and resistance using two perfectly synchronized voltage sources
Raouf, M.H.A.,Kim, K.T.,Kim, M.S. Published for IMEKO by the Institute of Measuremen 2015 MEASUREMENT -LONDON- Vol.60 No.-
A programmable bridge has been constructed by using two arbitrary waveform generators and DVM as a null-detector for capacitance and resistance measurements. The generators are controlled by a software program which has been specially designed to achieve their optimum performance. Methodology of this bridge has been introduced demonstrating the best way to get accurate ratio measurements up to the accuracy level of 10-5. Our bridge has been used, through this research, to get resistance to resistance and capacitance to resistance ratios at different frequencies. Validation of this bridge has been carried out through comparisons with another conventional bridge, which show satisfying agreement. In addition, the bridge has been verified by calculating its asymmetry which is about 0.65ppm in some cases. Finally, the uncertainty budget for the bridge measurements has been introduced in details.
Effect of humidity on the calibration of the four-terminal-pair air-dielectric capacitance standards
Lee, H.K.,Kim, D.B.,Kim, W.S. Published for IMEKO by the Institute of Measuremen 2016 MEASUREMENT -LONDON- Vol.86 No.-
In this work, the effect of relative humidity (RH) on two commercial four-terminal-pair (4TP) air-dielectric capacitance standards has been measured and analyzed. The capacitance is linearly proportional to the RH under 50% owing to the dependence of the dielectric constant of air on the RH. Over 50%, a clear dielectric dispersion has been observed. It is probable that this dispersion is caused by the interfacial polarization of the adsorbed water molecules on the oxidized aluminum electrodes. In calibration aspect, it is recommended to store at least for a day to stabilize the RH inside the standard and calibrate it at RH lower than 50%. The RH coefficient of the capacitance under 50% was estimated as 3(μF/F)/% from the measurement.
