      • Culturally Responsive Leadership in Bilingual Education: An Exploration of the Practices Implemented by Elementary School Principals in Southern New Mexico

Peterson, Gabriela New Mexico State University ProQuest Dissertations 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 236335

This qualitative study identified the culturally responsive school leadership practices implemented by principals serving in elementary schools with bilingual education programs in Southern New Mexico. By utilizing a phenomenological approach, this research revealed four major themes. These themes include (1) use of parental voice in school structures, (2) development of teacher capacity for culturally responsive pedagogy, (3) promotion of inclusive classroom environments, and (4) implementation of meaningful language accommodations for families. These findings suggest that school principals serving in elementary schools with bilingual education programs in Southern New Mexico work with parents, students, teachers, and staff to create elementary schools that recognize the importance of the culture, language, values, beliefs, practices, and traditions of their English language learner students to effectively meet their social, emotional, linguistic, and academic needs. These findings also suggest that school principals serving in elementary schools with bilingual education programs in Southern New Mexico have a comprehensive understanding of the concepts of culturally responsive education and use that understanding to transform their schools into learning spaces where their English language learner students embrace and feel the value of their home culture and language.

      • Your Stress Ain’t Like Mine! A Mixed Methodological Study Focused on the Impact of the Chronic Racial Stress Response and Coping on the Health of Adult African/Black Americans

Rislin, Jamey Leeanne New Mexico State University ProQuest Dissertations 2018 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 236063

African/Black Americans have higher rates of physical health problems (National Center for Health Statistics, 2013) and often more debilitating forms of mental health problems as compared to the general population (Himle, Baser, Taylor, Campbell & Jackson, 2009). While many factors have been associated with these physical and mental health challenges, there is overwhelming evidence that racism has been correlated to problematic physical and mental health conditions for African/Black Americans (Anderson, 2012; Dressler, Oths & Gravlee, 2005; Gravlee, 2009; Paradies et al., 2015; Pieterse, Todd, Neville & Carter, 2012). Chronic exposure to racism is associated with race-related stress, which is defined as stress induced by and attributed to experiences of racism (Clark, Anderson, Clark & Williams, 1999; Harrell, 2000; Paradies, 2006). The current study seeks to understand the impact of two forms of race-related stress, event-based/episodic and prolonged activation and anticipatory stress, on anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, general mental health symptoms, and general physical health symptoms. In addition, the study seeks to understand if mindfulness and other forms of coping attenuate the relationship between the mental and physical health conditions under study. The current study is a mixed methodological study with a qualitative strand, phenomenological framework-thematic analysis, and a quantitative strand, correlational cross-sectional hierarchal-moderated regression. To understand how event-based/episodic race-related stress, prolonged activation and anticipatory race related stress, mindfulness, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, general mental health symptoms and general physical health symptoms are associated with one another the data from both strands of the analysis are denoted, explained and integrated.

      • An Investigation of Project-Based Curriculum: Effects of STEM Education on Student Achievement Levels in State Standardized Algebra Test

Ozer, Mehmet A New Mexico State University ProQuest Dissertations 2021 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 236063

Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) oriented schools are being formed to provide 21st century learning opportunities for students. After going through an exhaustive evaluation period schools are being recognized as STEM schools. The number of these schools is increasing every year. Education agencies provide professional development and support for the schools which are recognized as a STEM school. These schools are particularly focused on transforming schools into academies which engage teachers and students in STEM with the goal of improving schools and the college readiness of students. This dissertation investigated if students who enrolled in STEM schools scored better on the state standardized algebra test. The researcher utilized quantitative data analysis processes including propensity score matching and ANOVA. The results revealed that STEM school students scored better in state standardized algebra test than their counterparts who were not enrolled at a STEM school but the effect size was relatively small.

      • Too Little or Too Much? An Examination of the Integrated Relationship Between Corporate Social and Financial Performance

Liang, Yanni New Mexico State University ProQuest Dissertations 2020 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 236063

This study addresses corporate social responsibility (CSR) overinvestment, an issue often overlooked in CSR research. I argue that the beneficial effect of corporate social performance (CSP) on corporate financial performance (CFP) is constrained by the availability of within-firm slack resources and external stakeholders residual resources, which are defined as corporate spare capacity (CSC) and stakeholder absorptive capacity (SAC). When a firm overly invests in CSR – going beyond the comfortable limits of CSC or SAC – it poses a threat to the profitability of the firm. Accordingly, the relationship between CSP and CFP turns negative. While Barnett proposed a U-shaped model, depicting the necessary trigger stage for the occurrence of the positive effect of CSP on CFP, my proposition presents a saturating stage in which social overinvestment causes the positive CSP-CFP relationship to become negative. Therefore, I propose that the integrated relationship between CSP and CFP follows an S-shaped curve. My argument is supported by empirical analyses of a panel data set of 363 firms, which I created by merging the Kinder, Lydenberg, Domini & Co. (KLD) and Compustat data sets for 2003 to 2016. I also examined the influence of firm size and the adoption of social media in US households on the CSP-CFP relationship. In the closing chapter, the implications of my findings for management are presented, and the limitations of this work are highlighted.

      • Falls Risk Classification Using Smartphone Based Inertial Sensors and Deep Learning

Martinez, Matthew T New Mexico State University ProQuest Dissertations 2018 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 236063

In this research, we use a parallel dataset consisting of pressure sensitive walkway and inertial measurements of gait. We use the walkway measurements to develop a Bayesian classifier to classify older adults as either at low or high falls risk. We use the inertial gait measurements to develop a deep neural network based falls risk classifier. Our Bayesian classifier is developed using walkway measurements collected from 854 adults over the age of 65. The walkway measurements are first used to construct vectors of relative change in risk ratio and are used to determine low- and high-risk labels. Next, we train a two-component Gaussian mixture model using vectors of gait variables. After training, we construct a Bayesian classifier using the GMM posterior probability estimates. We evaluate our classifier to determine how well the gait vectors map to the low and high falls risk classes. Through a Monte Carlo simulation and an analysis of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC), we determine a decision threshold by maximizing Youden's J-statistic. Our research demonstrates that the Bayesian classifier, when compared to the k-means falls risk labels, achieves an accuracy greater than 96% at predicting low or high falls risk.We develop a deep neural network based falls risk classifier using 657 inertial measurements of gait. We use the walkway measurements and Bayesian classifier to assign each inertial measurement a low or high-risk label. Our network architecture uses fully convolutional neural networks allowing us to directly classify the older adult gait data as either low or high risk. Due to the limited nature of our dataset, we first pre-train the models to perform activity recognition. Then via transfer learning, we train the network for a falls risk classification. Our results show that via transfer learning, the falls risk classifier obtains an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 93.3%. This result is 10.6% higher than the equivalent model trained without the use of transfer learning. The results of this research demonstrate that we can directly classify inertial measurements of gait as being either low or high risk of falling.

      • “It’s a Hot Queer Mess”: Mental Health Providers’ Experiences Counseling Survivors of Queer Intimate Partner Violence

Song, Chelse Lang New Mexico State University ProQuest Dissertations 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 236063

Extant literature shows a high prevalence and substantial mental health impact of Queer intimate partner violence (IPV) on the LGBTQ community. There does exist qualitative research on the experiences of providers in clinical work with heterosexual survivors of IPV, and quantitative research on the attitudes of providers towards lesbian and gay survivors of IPV. Much less research is currently available on the real-life experience of mental health service providers actively involved in clinical work with this population. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore how providers describe the experience of clinical work with survivors of Queer IPV in order to lessen this disparity and fill this gap in the current body of research. A total of 13 participants were interviewed, including Counseling Psychologists, Clinical Psychologists, Social Workers, and Therapists, about their clinical experiences serving survivors of Queer IPV. The eight themes which emerged from participants’ stories highlighted significant aspects of clinical work with survivors of Queer IPV, including 1) Lack of training in IPV, LGBT issues, and especially in Queer IPV; 2) Systemic barriers to treatment; 3) Provider’s own personal experience of trauma/IPV; 4) “It’s a hot Queer mess”; 5) “A healthy gay relationship seemed so impossible;” 6) Relational approach over theoretical model; 7) Trust is earned, not assumed; and 8) “I can only do so much”. Future research should focus on training and supervision, addressing systemic barriers to care, and Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) providers’ experiences.

      • "You Make It Work:” Black Women’s Gendered Racism Experiences and Coping Processes in Counseling Psychology Doctoral Programs

Hardwick, Ja'lessa New Mexico State University ProQuest Dissertations 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 236063

While suffering from gendered racism experiences, Black women are at a higher risk for developing chronic physical and mental health conditions. Furthermore, Black women in doctoral programs are more likely to experience inadequate support and guidance that can ultimately hinder professional development and progress. The current literature has highlighted mental health outcomes associated with chronic exposure to racism; however, within the context of counseling psychology, there is a dearth of research that examines how racism within training programs impact the mental health and professional development for Black women. This grounded theory study aims to understand and describe the process of how experiences of gendered racism and other racism experiences impact the mental health and professional development of Black women. Utilizing semi-structured interviews, via video-conferencing, Black women were interviewed and discussed their experiences of gendered racism experiences during their training in counseling psychology doctoral programs. Findings from the present study suggest that counseling psychology programs have demonstrated inconsistency between their professional values (i.e., social justice and multiculturalism) and exhibited behaviors which contribute to Black women’s experiences of gendered racism. Recommendations encourage counseling psychology to recommit to professional values and expand knowledge around sociocultural factors that impact Black women’s lived experiences. Additionally, counseling psychology is encouraged to improve strategies for recruitment and retention of Black students and faculty.

      • Survival, Habitat Selection, and Genetic Diversity of Lesser Prairie-Chickens in Regions of Energy Development in New Mexico

Lawrence, Andrew Joseph New Mexico State University ProQuest Dissertations 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 236063

The lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) is an imperiled grouse endemic to the southern Great Plains of North America. Over the past century, the species has declined in abundance and distribution primarily due to anthropogenic factors that fragment, degrade, and destroy habitat. In this study, I examined how anthropogenic features associated with oil and natural gas development influence lesser prairie-chicken survival and habitat selection, and how demographic instability influences population genetic diversity and structure. To better understand patterns of lesser prairie-chicken survival in habitat with varying levels of anthropogenic infrastructure associated with oil and natural gas development, I monitored survival of 178 radio-tagged male and female lesser prairie-chickens in eastern New Mexico, USA, from 2013 to 2015. I found a substantial decrease in adult and subadult male survival with increasing densities of utility poles. The relationship between survival and utility pole density for females was weaker and not as clearly supported as for males. I did not find a detectable difference among probable mortality causes and associated utility pole densities. I analyzed lesser prairie-chicken habitat selection in relation to anthropogenic features and woody vegetation at two scales (home range and lek area) and for the spring (lekking) and summer (non-lekking) seasons. Most of the features I examined were avoided to a greater degree during the summer compared to the spring. These effects were more apparent at the lek area scale than the home range scale. Lesser prairie-chickens showed particularly strong avoidance of high-density areas of utility poles and trees, and of close proximity and high cover areas of mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa). I also examined genetic diversity, effective population size, genetic structure, and tested for genetic bottlenecks in response to changes in lesser prairie-chicken abundance. I did not detect genetic structure, but I provide evidence for a genetic bottleneck and show that effective population size and genetic diversity are comparable to previous studies despite recent population fluctuations.

      • Reaching an Intersection Between Multicultural Education and Parametros Curriculares Nacionais (National Curricular Guidelines)/Temas Transversais (Cross-Curricular Themes) in a Foreign Language Teacher’s Education Program – A Descriptive Case Study

Rocha Paixao Cortes, Joao Luis New Mexico State University ProQuest Dissertations 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 236063

A quality basic education that allows meaningful learning can serve to eradicate great social differences and conflicts existing in our society. The development of the citizen is one of the main goals of today's education, which seeks to promote the person as a whole. In the present study, I propose an intersection between Temas Transversais (PCNs, 1998) and the proposal of a Multicultural Education formulated by Banks (1993, 2009) and Sleeter (1991, 2008) in the context of teacher education in Brazil with the aim of answer the following research questions: How are the principles of Multicultural Education reflected in Brazilian foreign teacher education policy and practice of Temas Transversais? What are the perceptions of foreign language teachers working in Brazilian basic education regarding the preparation obtained in the teacher education program to deal with Temas Transversais in their daily activities? In order to accomplish this goal, I first used theory in Multicultural Education with the objective of giving theoretical basis to the analyzed documents secondly, I used Thematic analysis to analyze interviews with four Spanish teachers where they express their perceptions on their preparation regarding to work with themes of social justice in a specific teachers education program. By answering the research questions I found that it is appropriate to use Multicultural Education theory as theoretical foundation to explain the curricular orientations for Brazilian basic education also, analyzing the participants interviews, I identified that the teacher education program, from which the participants graduated, did not effectively prepare the professionals to follow the guidelines contained in the documents of the National Curriculum Parameters (1997).
