      • Faculty Descriptions of Teaching Strategies for Professionalism in Nursing Students

Smith Levine, Diane L Grand Canyon University ProQuest Dissertations & T 2020 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 235295

The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore how nursing faculty described strategies for teaching professionalism, across the curriculum, to pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students at one college in the Midwest. It was not known how nursing faculty described developed strategies. This study was supported by two core theoretical foundations: Miller’s Wheel of Professionalism in Nursing model (Miller, 1988) and Benner’s Novice to Expert Nurse concept (Benner, 2001). Research study questions included: RQ1: How do pre-licensure nursing faculty, in one program in the Midwestern United States describe teaching professionalism to BSN students across the curriculum? and RQ2: How do pre-licensure BSN nursing faculty, in one program in the Midwestern United States, describe integration of specific teaching strategies for professionalism into nursing courses across the curriculum in the university? Through a case study involving interviews (n=11) and one focus group (n=3), with nursing faculty and a document review of 20 nursing course syllabi, the qualitative study was implemented. Thematic analysis utilizing NVivo12 software provided five primary nodes with corresponding themes addressing the research questions. It was found that faculty developed 12 specific curricular teaching strategies in the syllabi for classroom and clinical that may enhance instillation of concepts. Role modeling and simulation exercises were the most common themes identified. Implications include curricular revisions with described strategies woven into existing curriculum and commitment to development activities for nursing faculty, to ensure applicable role modeling.

      • Weighing In: Utilization of a Parent-child Based Education Nutrition Program for School-aged Children in Primary Care

Wise, Amy Grand Canyon University ProQuest Dissertations & T 2020 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 235039

Pediatric obesity creates economic and social burden in the United States (U.S). The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental project was to determine if the implementation of nutrition and physical activity education from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Department of Agriculture would impact body mass index (BMI) and specific eating behaviors of obese children ages 6-12 years old. The project was implemented in a federally qualified health clinic in a rural town in the southwestern U.S. over four-weeks. Bowen’s family systems theory provided the theoretical foundation for the project. The population were 12 parent-child dyads. Data on each child’s BMI was measured by anthropometric values and using an independent t- test, showed both statistical and clinical significance (t (7) = 3.00, p = .020.) pre and postimplementation. The Child Feeding Questionnaire assessed three specific eating behaviors. Using Pearson correlation, results of the specific eating behaviors were parental perceived responsibility and monitoring (rp = 0.50, p = .048, 95% CI [0.01, 0.80]), perceived weight and monitoring (rp = 0.56, p = .024, 95% CI [0.09, 0.83]), and parental concern about child weight and pressure to eat (rp = 0.68, p = .004, 95% CI [0.27, 0.88]) pre and post-implementation. These results were not statistically significant but were clinically significant as it brought awareness to the parent on their role in their child’s eating behaviors. Therefore recommendations were to sustain the project and reanalyze the results in six months as the evidence indicates the intervention may reduce childhood obesity.

      • Pressure Injury Prevention Education for Nurses and Its Impact on Patient Outcomes

Joseph, Shaine Grand Canyon University ProQuest Dissertations & T 2019 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 235039

Rationale/Background: Hospital acquired pressure injuries are associated with quality of patient care, patient satisfaction and is a financial burden to hospitals in the United States. Critical care patients are at high risk for developing hospital acquired pressure injuries due to comorbidities. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to implement a care bundle and to provide educational intervention for nurses to reduce the rates of hospital acquired pressure injury formation among patients in the medical and surgical Intensive Care Units at an academic medical center in South Texas. Theoretical Framework: Roger’s theory of unitary human beings and the self-care deficit theory by Orem were the theoretical foundations for this quality improvement project. Project Method and Design: A quantitative descriptive pre-and post-test method was used for this project. The project used a sample size of 29 patients from two selected ICUs. Data Results: Paired sample t-test results indicated a significant improvement in the knowledge level of nurses with educational interventions (p = 0.008). The prevalence survey results performed four weeks after the care bundle implementation impacted patient outcomes positively with a decrease in the number of hospital-acquired pressure injuries. Implications: Based on the findings of this project, it is recommended that the care bundle implementation in ICUs may increase the quality of care by decreasing the incidence of hospital acquired pressure injuries.

      • The Relationship Between Online RN-To-BSN Student Satisfaction and Persistence

Hicks, Alexis Lynn Grand Canyon University ProQuest Dissertations & T 2020 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 235039

The increase in RN-BSN online education has brought about the problem of whether satisfaction in an online RN-BSN program has a relationship with persistence. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine if, and to what extent, there was a relationship between nursing student satisfaction and persistence of online RN-BSN students in the United States. The curriculum, faculty, social interaction, and environment model, the revised model of dropout from distance learning in organizations, and the proposed model of dropout from distance education was used as the theoretical foundation. The author sought to find answers to the questions: is there a statistically significant correlation between student satisfaction factors, CFSE, and persistence as well as overall satisfaction and persistence among online RN-BSN students. The sample was from members of the National Student Nurses Association as well as two universities in West Virginia. The sample size consisted of 60 students that were currently enrolled in an online RN-BSN program. A survey was sent out that included the NSSS, the PSOE-N, and a demographic survey. Kendall’s tau-b was used for data analysis due to the small sample size. The results indicated that CFSE and overall satisfaction had p values less than 0.01 and were significant. In conclusion, a significant positive correlation between the factors of CFSE and overall satisfaction to persistence was found. Keywords: Satisfaction, Persistence, Online Education, RN-BSN programs, Nursing.

      • The Relationship Between Resilience and Innovation in the Microeconomics Business Market

Brown, Eric Lee Grand Canyon University ProQuest Dissertations & T 2020 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 235039

There is a strong need for microbusinesses to survive and grow to help boost the economy in Detroit. The City of Detroit still has not fully recovered from the largest municipal bankruptcy filing of close to approximately twenty billion a few years ago in the United States. Microbusiness owners are one of the major keys to turn around cities and states from economic ruin. However, microbusiness owners have a difficult task of coping with operating their companies while striving to become more innovative to survive and grow with a lack of resources. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study is to determine if and to what extent there is a relationship between resilience and innovation in the microeconomics business market in the state of Michigan in the United States. The research design is a correlational analysis. The researcher used the Connor and Davidson Resilience Framework as the theoretical outline which led the research question for this study. The researcher collected primary data via an electronic survey administered to a convenience sample from 84 entrepreneurs in Detroit. The researcher used the nonparametric Spearman’s rho correlation to analyze the relationship between resilience and innovation. The results of this study showed there was no significant relationship between resilience and innovation (p >.008). Microbusiness owners will benefit from the insight gained from this study to make more informed decisions to become more innovative. Future research should examine the specific problematic areas, which would include larger sample sizes that could give more insight into the relationship between resilience and innovation.

Coble, Roy Charles Grand Canyon University ProQuest Dissertations & T 2020 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 235039

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore the experiences of two-year college mathematics students, mathematics faculty, and alumni of the college who have a STEM degree requiring College Algebra and are currently in their STEM field, all in the Oklahoma region of the United States. Bandura’s SE theory and Engestrom’s CHAT were the theoretical framework. Three research questions guided this study: How do two-year college mathematics students describe their experience in the College Algebra coursework as it relates to their self-efficacy, in preparation for them to meet the requirements of STEM jobs upon completion of an Associate’s degree? How do two-year college mathematics faculty describe their experience and the nature of the College Algebra curriculum in preparing students for success, in meeting the requirements of STEM jobs upon graduation? How do two-year college alumni of STEM degree programs describe their experience in their College Algebra course in preparing them to meet the requirements of their STEM job? Twelve participants in three distinct groups were individually interviewed leading to a thematic analysis of the data. A four-step data analysis process revealed 10 core themes overall: Student themes of culture of influence through support, preparation for career, and educational value; Faculty themes of developing a learning culture, application of material, foundational knowledge, and workplace requirements; Alumni themes of workplace application, self-efficacy, and educational value. Student results indicated the material they were learning was adequate for a STEM career. Faculty held that the program is foundational for STEM jobs and ample to prepare students. Alumni felt prepared for STEM careers after graduation.

      • Telehealth and Technology in the Management of Type 2 Diabetes

Donovan, Karen Marie Grand Canyon University ProQuest Dissertations & T 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 235039

Following current clinical practice guidelines (CPG) may ensure diabetic patients receive the care they need. The project site noted a gap in using the full diabetes guidelines which included resources to improve diabetic patient outcomes. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental quality improvement project was to determine if or to what degree the implementation of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes guidelines on telehealth support and management would impact glucose levels when compared to current practice among patients with type 2diabetes in a primary care clinic in Southern California over four weeks. Dorthea Orem’s theory of self-care, Albert Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, and Edward Deming’s plan-do-study-act provided the project’s scientific underpinnings. Data on fasting blood sugars were retrieved from the electronic health record among a total sample size of 12 pre and four-weeks post implementation. A paired t-test showed a clinical and statistically significant improvement in the blood glucose levels from pre (M = 218.12, SD = 45.06)to post implementation(M = 170.06, SD = 39.41) t(15) = 3.28, p = .005. Based on the results, the implementation of the ADA Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes guidelines on telehealth support and management resulted in improved blood glucose levels. Recommendations include expansion of the program to additional clinical sites, measuring the hemoglobin A1C rather than the 30-day fasting blood glucose levels, and dissemination of the findings. Keywords: telehealth, fasting blood glucose, type 2 diabetes, self-efficacy, Albert Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, Edward Deming’s Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) change model, and Dorthea Orem’s theory of self-care.

      • Employees’ Description of Mental Health Interests and Needs in the Workplace

Beecher, Kristelle Grand Canyon University ProQuest Dissertations & T 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 235039

Mental health is a growing topic in the workplace. Although health and wellness programs are implemented to acknowledge mental health, the perspective of the organizational leader frequently drives the selection of which programs to implement. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to explore how employees who have not participated in a health and wellness program describe their mental health interests and needs in the workplace in the Western United States. The Stress at Work model by Cooper and Marshall guided the research questions: how do employees who have not participated in a health and wellness program describe their mental health interests in the workplace; and how do employees who have not participated in a health and wellness program describe their mental health needs in the workplace? The researcher leveraged a qualitative descriptive study to explore the perspectives of 23 participants in the United States using two data sources: 12 one-on-one interviews, and two focus groups with five and six participants respectively. The research analysis was performed using Braun and Clarke’s Thematic Analysis model and the findings presented six main themes that influenced employee mental health. The research concluded that of the six themes, personality was most frequently described (451 codes) as an influence in employee mental health interests and needs, with the workplace (348 codes) and external stressors (213 codes) being the second and third most described. This research uncovers the need for organizations to individualize their approach in the design of mental health and wellness programs.

      • Implementation of AUDIT-C with Adults on a University Campus Healthcare Facility

Sutton, Jamie Lee Grand Canyon University ProQuest Dissertations & T 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 235039

Alcohol use can be a risk factor for alcohol use disorder (AUD). At the project site, there was no process in place to assess for AUD, prompting the need for an evidence-based intervention. The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental quality improvement project was to determine if or to what degree the implementation of the World Health Organization (WHO) Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Concise (AUDIT-C)would impact the rate of identification and referral to appropriate services for AUD when compared to current practice among adult at-risk patients in a primary care center on a university campus in central Arizona over four weeks. Nola Pender’s health promotion middle-range nursing theory and Kurt Lewin’s change model provided the scientific underpinnings for the project. Data were retrieved from the facility’s electronic health record. The total sample size was 991; n = 661 in the comparative group and n = 330 in the implementation group. To analyze the comparison and implementation group data, chi-square tests were used. The results indicated there was a statistically significant improvement in AUD identification rates χ2(1, N = 991) = 42.97, p = .001. However, results for the volume of referrals were not found to be statistically significant, χ2(1, N = 682) = .001, p = .999. Despite the lack of statistical significance, clinical significance was noted in a 6.4% improvement in the identification of AUD. Therefore, the implementation of the WHO AUDIT-C may lead to earlier identification of AUD and promote healthier lifestyle choices in adult college students. It is recommended that data collection be extended for six months to acquire more information on referrals.

      • Self-Efficacy and Health Literacy Predicting Physical Activity Behaviors in Low-income Hispanic Males

Padilla, Flor Viridiana Grand Canyon University ProQuest Dissertations & T 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 235039

The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine health literacy and self-efficacy as direct and interactive predictors of physical activity in low-income, Hispanic males in the United States, when controlling for preferred language. The theoretical foundation was provided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory. This study was conducted with a convenience sample of 95 participants who completed an online survey that included three validated instruments: the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, the FLIGHT/VIDAS, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire short form. The research question asked to what extent self-efficacy and health literacy predicted physical activity in low-income Hispanic males when controlling for language preference. The results of hierarchical linear regression showed a statistically significant predictive relationship between health literacy and physical activity. The complete Model 4 was statistically significant, Fchange (1, 91) = 12.603, p = .001. R2 = .125, adj. R2 = .097. This result was consistent with previous research findings. The standardized beta coefficients showed health literacy was the only statistically significant predictor of physical activity, β = .357, t = 3.572, p = .001. The control variable (language preference (English vs. Spanish), self-efficacy, and the interaction term were not statistically significant predictors of physical activity. The findings from this study justify further research on the relevance of health literacy to physical activity among low-income Hispanic males. Future research is needed to identify other significant positive factors that can be manipulated to enhance engagement in physical activity for this population.
