Divinization or theosis, is a goal of Christian faith and life. When the promise of divinization is extended to the holistic transformation of all creation, both humans and nonhumans, it envisages God’s redemptive actions for the whole world beyond an anthropocentric soteriology. Considering Maximus the Confessor who addresses theosis as the divine embrace of humanity within the hypostatic union of divinity and humanity in Christ in defense of the Chalcedon formula, I argue that divinization is reconfigured as the hypostatic union of divinity and the nature of the world in which the material realities are embraced by God without being merged with or separated from the divine nature. When the ontologically inseparable yet distinct relation between God and the world is manifested in the enfleshment of the Holy Spirit, the pneumatological configuration of the material world does not exclude divine transcendence. Rather, divine immanence in the materiality of the Spirit leads all creatures to the divine mystery in which all beings and forms become sacred and full of life.Karen Barad’s notion of intra-actions as an ontologically inseparable yet distinct relation in which matter is redefined as vibrant, or agential, not inert, fixed, or determined breaks dualistic boundaries of individual properties or entities, connoting that individuals only exist within phenomena in which the reciprocating articulations of individuals become new and meaningful. In this regard, I argue, a Korean philosophical term, po-wol (包越 포월) envisions the entangling activities of embracing-in-keeping-differences since the term po (包) means “to embrace others,” while wol (越) means to “go beyond a limit.” Thus, the po-wol communicates the ontologically inseparable yet distinct relation between transcendence and immanence.Divinization as the po-wol of the Spirit radically materializes the sacredness of God within the existence and experiences of the material world, resisting prevailing systems of domination and exploitation which frustrate the vita-bility of all beings and forms. That is, the po-wol of the Spirit awakens the material world’s capacity to be vital and full of exuberant vigor, and therefore, to be subversive to desacralizing ideologies or practices in relation to social, political, and economic inequalities.

This thesis project focuses on preaching to offer assurance of grace to the people who are living in the midst of struggle, and to help them see ‘who they are, what they are, and where they are’ as Burmese-Chin refugees in the U.S.A. It is based on the belief that preaching assurance of grace and of God’s saving act in their journey of life to encourage in a foreign land and assures the congregation of God’s presence and care. In The United Methodist Church, the preaching of the deacon is an underdeveloped voice that should be included among all the other preaching voices in the church. The preaching voice of the deacon is grounded in their call to compassion, justice, reconciliation, and restoration, and is informed by biblical and historical contexts that affirm and confirm the value and necessity of such preaching. Naming and claiming the voice of the deacon as preacher requires deacons to understand themselves, their call to ministry, and the relevance and importance of their voice that calls attention to the need for justice in action as valid and necessary in our world today. The voice of the United Methodist deacon as preacher is a necessary voice in the local church and beyond for the advancement of social justice. This project thesis rests on the belief that for the UM deacon, claiming their voice as preacher helps them more fully fulfill their call to ministry and live into their baptismal and ordination vows.
