함세덕 초기 희곡의 성장 모티프 연구 : 「동승」,「산허구리」,「해연」을 중심으로

본고는 함세덕 희곡에 자주 등장하는 ‘소년형 인물’을 성장의 주체로 상정하고, 이들이 성장에 이르는 과정을 면밀히 살펴, 이러한 연구가 문학 교육적으로 어떤 의의를 가지고 있는지 밝히는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 함세덕 희곡에는 유독 14~18세 사이의 ‘소년형 인물’들이 자주 등장한다. ‘소년형 인물’은 함세덕 희곡에 전반에 걸쳐 등장하는 하나의 의미 있는 모델로 이들은 극적 현실 속에서 ‘세계’를 ‘발견(discovery)’한다. 본고는 소년형 인물들이 세계를 발견하는 과정에서 일어나는 각성과 그로 인한 인물의 행동 변화의 총체를 ‘성장(成長, growth)’으로 보고, 함세덕 희곡에 나타난 성장의 여러 국면들을 면밀히 검토하고, 이러한 연구가 문학 교육적으로 어떤 의의를 가지고 있는지 밝히고자 하였다. 연구 대상으로는 함세덕의 희곡 작품 중 주체의 정신적 성장이 가장 뚜렷하게 드러난 작품인 ｢동승｣, ｢산허구리｣, ｢해연｣을 주 텍스트로 상정하여 연구를 진행하였다. Ⅱ장에서는 ｢동승｣, ｢산허구리｣, ｢해연｣에 등장하는 소년형 인물의 극적 행동을 분석하고, 이들이 성장에 이르는 과정을 도출하였다. 또한 세 작품에 공통적으로 나타나는 시 · 공간적 특징을 중심으로 성장이라는 주제가 극적 공간에서 어떻게 형상화되는지 도 함께 살펴보았다. 성장의 주체는 세계를 발견하고, 이를 통한 각성으로 자신에 대해 새로운 인식을 하게 되거나, 주변 세계에 대한 새로운 인식을 얻게 되면서 성장하게 된다. 성장이라는 주제는 세 작품 속에서 ‘겨울’이라는 성장을 준비하는 시간으로 형상화 되었으며, 성장 주체와 부모 세대와의 갈등을 공간 인식의 차이로 드러났다. 또한 성장의 주체들은 현재 상황에서 벗어나 새로운 공간을 모색하는데 이는 대부분 닫힌 공간에서 열린 공간으로의 지향으로 나타나기도 했다. Ⅲ장에서는 함세덕의 초기 희곡이 문학 교육적으로 어떠한 의의를 가지고 있는지를 ‘성장’이라는 주제적 측면과 극 장르의 특수성이라는 두 가지 측면에서 알아보고, ｢동승｣을 예로 문학 교육 현장의 실제 수업 장면에 활용할 수 있는 교수 · 학습 방법을 제안해보았다. 이러한 교수 · 학습 활동을 통해 성장기에 있는 학습자들은 문학과 자신의 삶을 연관 지어 보는 활동을 할 수 있다. 이러한 활동은 학습자가 긍정적인 방향으로 성장하는데 기여할 수 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다 하겠다. This study aims to reveal the literary educational significance of Ham Se-Deok's plays by regarding 'boy characters' as main agents of growth and by analyzing the process of growth. There are many 'boy characters' in Ham Se-Deok's plays whose ages range 14 to 18. As the significant characters throughout his plays, they 'discover' the 'real world' in the difficult situation. This study regards awakening which happens in process of discovering and changes of character's behaviors through it as 'the growth' and examines various aspects of growth, and reveals literary educational significance of this study. As the main texts of the study, <Dong seung>, <Sanheogury>, <Hae yeon> are selected. Because characters in them experience most noticeable spiritual growth in his plays. In Chapter II this study analyses boy character's behavior in <Dong seung>, <Sanheogury>, <Hae yeon> and draws the process of the growth, and also examines how the author embodies the growth motif by focusing on the common background. Main agents of growth 'grow' through discovering the 'real world' and awakening the selves or the world around them. The growth motif are embodied as 'Winter' when they get their growth ready. And conflicts between them and parents’ generation are revealed as disagreements about space recognition. Main agents of growth try to get out from present situation and pursue the new world, which is displayed as pursuing open world from closed world. In chapter Ⅲ this study examines literary educational significance of Ham Se-Deok's early plays focucing on the leitmotif and the uniqueness of play and also proposes teaching and learning method which is able to be utilized in class. This teaching and learning method enables students to make connection between literature and their own lifes. This activity has significance in that learners can grow in a positive direction.
