무크레이커 활동에 관한 연구 : 미국혁신주의 시대를 중심으로

이 論文은 革新主義時代에 나타난 問題들을 살펴보고 이것들에 대한 무크레이커의 暴露活動을 분석하여 眞相을 밝히고자 하였다. 무크레이커는 一群의 열정적인 言論人들로서 1902年부터 1912年까지의 수 년간에 걸쳐 맥클루어, 코스모폴리탄. 에브리바디. 문, 콜리誌 등의 값싼 大衆雜誌를 통하여 實業界, 政治界, 社會전반의 不條理를 폭로하였고 풍부한 各種資料를 제시하면서 告發하여 大衆들에게 改革의 必要性을 각성시키는 글을 발표하였다. 아이다 타벨의 "스탠다드 석유회사의 역사"는 석유트러스트의 부정을링컨 스태펜스의 "都市의 羞恥"는 도시운영의 非民主性을 입톤 싱클레어의 "밀림 "은 소름끼치는 시카고 정육저장소를 각각 暴露하였다. 무크레이커들은 革新主義運動에 직접 참가하지는 않았지만 美國生活의 腐敗와 羞恥를 暴露하여 당시 社會의 핵심세력으로 등장한 新中産階級의 정당한 분개에 불을 붙임으로써 革新主義運動을 일련의 散發的인 캠페인이 아닌 全國的 蹶起運動이 되게 하는데 큰 역할을 담당하였다. 그리고 여론을 행동으로 옮기게 함으로써 루즈벨트 大統領의 革新政治 수행에 하나의추진력이 되었다. 이같은 그들의 活動은 1906年의 食肉檢査法과 같은 聯邦法律에 잘 드러나 있으며 또한 쇠고기 트러스트와 美國 雪糖 製造會社에 대한 정부의 규제조치에서도 찾아볼 수 있다. 방법이 다소 극단적이고 급진적이기는 하였지만 그들은 民主主義를 부정하거나 資本主義 經濟體制를 전복시키고자 하는 것이 아니라 오히려 그것들을 더 보완하고 튼튼한 기반위에 구축하고자 하였다. The thesis intended to inquire the real state of exposure of muckraker by examining and analysing the problems emerged duri-ng progressive era. Muckraker, a group of enthusiastic Journalist exposed from1902 to 1912 unfairness of the business world, Political circ-les, the world of large and published an account awakening me-ssity of the reform to the masses, presenting the rich variousmaterials through Meclure's, Cosmopo1itan's, Everybody's, Mun's, Collier's. Ida M.Tarbell's History of the stannard oil company portra-yed practice of oil trust, Lincoln steffens's The shame of the cities attacked undemocratic of municipal management, upt-on sinclair's Jungle exposed grim chicago packing plants. Muckraker did not take part in the porogressive movemennt. However, by exposing the shame and corruption of American publ -ic life, the muckrakers fired the rightous indignation of the new middle class, In so doing, they helped to make the progre-ssive movement a national aprising instead of a series of spor-adic Compaign and in stirring the public opinion to the point of action, became impuls of accomplishment of Roosevel presid-ent's progrossive politics. Muckraker and their activity was found to such federal legi-station as the Meat Inspection Act and the pure Food and Drug Act ( 1906 ), and also contrace the goverment's Sui t again-st the Beef trust and the American Refining Company. Though a method some extreme radical, they did not wish to deny democracy or abandon the capitalist system. Rather than by stressing it's maldies, they sought reinforce and constructed on health basis.
