English in Brazil : Between Passive Acquiescence and Insurgent Chauvinism

Rajagopalan, Kanavillil,Freitas, Alice Cunha De 대한언어학회 2002 언어학 Vol.10 No.2

Rajagopalan, Kanavillil and Freitas, Alice Cunha de. 2002. English in Brazil: Between Passive Acquiescence and Insurgent Chauvinism. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal,, 10(2), 85 110. The imperialist pretensions of the English language across the globe have increasingly been the focus of attention ever since the publication of such classics as Phillipson (1992), Pennycook (1994, 1998) and others. Whereas these early writers did issue a wake up call to all those interested in the subject in way or one another, the larger picture they succeeded in portraying whether or not they actually int ended to do so was one of utter helplessness in the face of a world wide trend which had an inexorable internal purposiveness of its own and against which conventional deterrents seemed hopelessly inadequate Mare recently, however, some scholars have locked at the same phenomenon from the standpoint of those on the periphery and pointed out ways and means by which resistance can be and often is offered ,order even the most trying of circumstances (Canagarajah, 1999). This paper is an attempt to take stock of the situation in Brazil. We claim that the situation of EEL is, as of now, one of stalemate: caught in the middle of contradictory trends and ambiguously poised between the extreme responses of total acquiescence and outright rejection of English.

The effects of different metal posts, cements, and exposure parameters on cone-beam computed tomography artifacts

Freitas Ana Priscila Lira de Farias,Peixoto Larissa Rangel,Mariz Suassuna Fernanda Clotilde,Bento Patrícia Meira,Maia Amorim Ana Marly Araújo,Rovaris Silva Karla,de Almeida Barros Renata Quirino,Pontu 대한영상치의학회 2023 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.53 No.2

Purpose: This study assessed the intensity of artifacts produced by 2 metal posts, 2 cements, and different exposure parameters using 2 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) units. Materials and Methods: The sample was composed of 20 single-rooted premolars, divided into 4 groups: Ni-Cr/ zinc phosphate, Ni-Cr/resin cement, Ag-Pd/zinc phosphate, and Ag-Pd/resin cement. Samples were scanned before and after post insertion and cementation using a CS9000 3D scanner with 4 exposure parameters (85/90 kV and 6.3/10 mA) and an i-CAT scanner with 120 kV and 5 mA. The presence of artifacts was assessed subjectively by 2 observers and objectively by a trained observer using ImageJ software. The Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, weighted kappa, and chi-square tests were used to assess data at a 95% confidence level (α<0.05). Results: In the subjective analyses, AgPd presented more hypodense and hyperdense lines than NiCr (P<0.05), and more hypodense halos were found using i-CAT (P<0.05) than using CS9000 3D. More hypodense halos, hypodense lines, and hyperdense lines were observed at 10 mA than at 6.3 mA (P<0.05). More hypodense halos were observed at 85 kV than at 90 kV (P<0.05). CS9000 3D presented more hypodense and hyperdense lines than i-CAT (P<0.05). In the objective analyses, AgPd presented higher percentages of hyperdense and hypodense artifacts than NiCr (P<0.05). Zinc phosphate cement presented higher hyperdense artifact percentages on CS9000 3D scans (P<0.05). CS9000 3D presented higher artifact percentages than i-CAT (P<0.05). Conclusion: High-atomic-number alloys, higher tube current, and lower tube voltage may increase the artifacts present in CBCT images.

Panoramic radiographs underestimate extensions of the anterior loop and mandibular incisive canal

de Brito, Ana Caroline Ramos,Nejaim, Yuri,de Freitas, Deborah Queiroz,Santos, Christiano de Oliveira Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2016 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.46 No.3

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to detect the anterior loop of the mental nerve and the mandibular incisive canal in panoramic radiographs (PAN) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, as well as to determine the anterior/mesial extension of these structures in panoramic and cross-sectional reconstructions using PAN and CBCT images. Materials and Methods: Images (both PAN and CBCT) from 90 patients were evaluated by 2 independent observers. Detection of the anterior loop and the incisive canal were compared between PAN and CBCT. The anterior/mesial extension of these structures was compared between PAN and both cross-sectional and panoramic CBCT reconstructions. Results: In CBCT, the anterior loop and the incisive canal were observed in 7.7% and 24.4% of the hemimandibles, respectively. In PAN, the anterior loop and the incisive canal were detected in 15% and 5.5% of cases, respectively. PAN presented more difficulties in the visualization of structures. The anterior/mesial extensions ranged from 0.0 mm to 19.0 mm on CBCT. PAN underestimated the measurements by approximately 2.0 mm. Conclusion: CBCT appears to be a more reliable imaging modality than PAN for preoperative workups of the anterior mandible. Individual variations in the anterior/mesial extensions of the anterior loop of the mental nerve and the mandibular incisive canal mean that is not prudent to rely on a general safe zone for implant placement or bone surgery in the interforaminal region.

Calcium-doped zinc oxide nanocrystals as an innovative intracanal medicament: a pilot study

de Souza Gabriela Leite,Magalhães Thamara Eduarda Alves,Freitas Gabrielle Alves Nunes,Lemus Nelly Xiomara Alvarado,Barbosa Gabriella Lopes de Rezende,Silva Anielle Christine Almeida,Moura Camilla Chri 대한치과보존학회 2022 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.47 No.4

Objectives This study investigated the cytotoxicity, radiopacity, pH, and dentinal tubule penetration of a paste of 1.0% calcium-doped zinc oxide nanocrystals (ZnO:1.0Ca) combined with propylene glycol (PRG) or polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol (PEG-PRG). Materials and Methods The pastes were prepared by mixing calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] or ZnO:1.0Ca with PRG or a PEG-PRG mixture. The pH was evaluated after 24 and 96 hours of storage in deionized water. Digital radiographs were acquired for radiopacity analysis and bubble counting of each material. The materials were labeled with 0.1% fluorescein and applied to root canals, and images of their dentinal tubule penetration were obtained using confocal laser scanning microscopy. RAW264.7 macrophages were placed in different dilutions of culture media previously exposed to the materials for 24 and 96 hours and tested for cell viability using the MTT assay. Analysis of variance and the Tukey test (α = 0.05) were performed. Results ZnO:1.0Ca materials showed lower viability at 1:1 and 1:2 dilutions than Ca(OH)2 materials (p < 0.0001). Ca(OH)2 had higher pH values than ZnO:1.0Ca at 24 and 96 hours, regardless of the vehicle (p < 0.05). ZnO:1.0Ca pastes showed higher radiopacity than Ca(OH)2 pastes (p < 0.01). No between-material differences were found in bubble counting (p = 0.0902). The ZnO:1.0Ca pastes had a greater penetration depth than Ca(OH)2 in the apical third (p < 0.0001). Conclusions ZnO:1.0Ca medicaments presented higher penetrability, cell viability, and radiopacity than Ca(OH)2. Higher values of cell viability and pH were present in Ca(OH)2 than in ZnO:1.0Ca. Non-conventional formulations for the finite element method

        de Freitas, J.A. Teixeira,de Almeida, J.P. Moitinho,Peraira, E.M.B. Ribeiro Techno-Press 1996 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.4 No.6

The paper reports on alternative hybrid/mixed formulations being developed by the Structural Analysis Research Group of Institute Superior T$\acute{e}$cnico. These formulations open the scope and increase the power of the finite element method by allowing different fields to be independently approximated, within certain consistency criteria, and by enhancing the use of a wide range of approximation functions. They have been applied to the analysis of 2-D problems, laminar structures and solids, using different constitutive relations, both in quasi-static and dynamic regimes. The fundamental properties of the formulations are identified and assessed and their performance is illustrated using simple, linear applications.

“BangBangCon: The Live” - A Case Study On Live Performances and Marketing Strategies With The Korean-Pop Group “BTS” During The Pandemic Scenario In 2020

Cristina Freitas de Jesus 한국마케팅학회 2021 ASIA MARKETING JOURNAL Vol.22 No.4

In 2020, the unexpected pandemic scenario has led to a downfall of live concerts performances, after the government restriction for events and gatherings with a large number of people. The Korean-Pop (K-Pop) group BTS (Bangtan sonyeondan) also had their concert tour canceled in 2020. Therefore, the group came up with an innovative project to the music market, called “BangBangCon: The Live”, a live streaming paid concert held by the group, on June 14th, which achieved a Guinness World Record for most viewers during a paid music concert, in a live streaming format. It’s important, then, to study this event, and initiate a debate about alternative ideas for marketing strategies with live streaming music performances. The method to accomplish this research was desk research, analysing all the communication delivered from BTS, studying the website and platform where the event “BangBangCon: The Live'' was held, and researching about the results the event has achieved. The results were the description of the event as a project, informing how many people have attended the event, and what were the marketing strategies that made it possible to become the highest audience to a paid live streaming concert, until the moment this article was published.

Interrelationships among endometriosis-related pain symptoms and their effects on health-related quality of life: a sectional observational study

( Marlon De Freitas Fonseca ),( Lilian Carvalho Aragao ),( Felipe Ventura Sessa ),( Jose Anacleto Dutra De Resende Jr ),( Claudio Peixoto Crispi ) 대한산부인과학회 2018 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.61 No.5

Objective To assess the correlation between different pain symptoms and different domains of women's health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Methods Seventy-seven women with deep infiltrating endometriosis were successively enrolled between June 2011 and August 2013 while being prepared to undergo laparoscopy due to pain and/or infertility. We quantified the intensities of dysmenorrhea, deep dyspareunia, chronic pelvic pain, and dyschezia (menstrual and non-menstrual) using a 11-point visual analog scale (VAS: 0-10) and the validated full versions of the Short Form 36 (SF36) and Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP30) questionnaires to assess HRQoL. The pain symptoms were considered simultaneously in a hierarchical agglomerative clustering method (exploratory multivariate approach) and the associations among scores were tested by bivariate correlation. Results Dysmenorrhea showed the lowest similarity on to the multivariate cluster analysis and no statistically significant correlation with the other pain symptoms: deep dyspareunia (P=0.244), chronic pelvic pain (P=0.108), menstrual dyschezia (P=0.238), and non-menstrual dyschezia (P=0.380). Dysmenorrhea and chronic pelvic pain were the main symptoms correlated with all domains of the SF36 and the EHP30 (core instrument) questionnaires (P<0.05). Conclusion Dysmenorrhea and chronic pelvic pain were independent factors associated with HRQoL.
