Preservation and Modernization in Historical European Capitals of the ⅩⅨth Century

파리와 런던이 양대 맥을 이루고 있는 19세기 유럽의 도시들은 서로 다른 다양한 모습을 띠고 있었다. 그런데 19세기 후반에 들어서면 이 도시들이 비교적 균일한 구조를 이루어 낸다. 도시는 더 이상 개별적인 구역들의 모임이 아니었고, 하나의 개체로 취급되었다. 거기에는 신속하고 현격한 변형이 있었음을 뜻하며, 바로 여기서 이 시기에 도시의 보존이라는 문제가 발생한다. 이런 관점에서 파리의 경우를 모델로 개발과 보존의 문제에 접근하고 있다. 파리의 경우는 균일화, 통합화를 기조로 한 하우스만 계획에서와 같이 현대의 수도에 걸맞는 균일한 외관을 만들었다. 그러나 이 계획은 파리를 완전히 새로운 도시로 바꾸어 놓았으나 보존에 대한 관심은 없었다. 다만 몇개의 중요한 기념물만을 보존하는 데 그쳤다. 하우스만이 고안한 방사상의 거리 패턴은 과거와 현재를 조화시키는 적절한 방법으로 여겨졌고 이는 주변 도시에 영향을 미쳤다. '계획되지 않은' 수도 런던은 균일성을 창조하는 데 실패하고, 여전히 복수 빌리지의 형태를 벗어나지 못하고 있었지만, 대토지소유자에 대한 통제정책은 균일화에 큰 역할을 하였다. 보온에 대한 관심은 후기 빅토리아 시대에 행해진 햄스테드 지역 주민의 보존운동과 같이 개별 건물에 대한 관심으로 나타났다. 그런 점에서 파리가 위로부터의 행정과 의사 결정의 상징이라면 런던은 민주주의의 모델로 칭송받고 있다. 두 도시에서 과거와 현재 사이의 문화적 갈등은 19세기말에 이르러서 나타났다. 잃어버린 지역사회에 대한 향수가 되살아나 그 내부의 역사적인 가치들을 중요시하게 되었다. 이러한 경향은 20세기에 들어와 더욱 폭넓은 보존정책의 기초가 되었다. 보존과 균일화라는 풀리지 않는 딜레마의 구체적인 상징의 하나는 로마의 경우 Zona monumentale이었다. 공원과 녹지대의 건설은 이러한 타협의 산물이었다. 파리의 경우는 Arenes do Lutece의 경우를 통해 살펴 볼 수 있다. 그러나 중요한 것은 개별 기념물보다는 역사적으로 중요한 환경을 중시하는 것이다. 새로운 도시계획의 경전-카밀리오 시테의 책 '예술적 원칙에 따른 도시건물'-이 주로 도시환경에 대한 접근을 시도한 것은 결코 우연이 아니었다. 통일화와 균일화에 대한 투쟁은 보존주의 운동에 의해 또 다른 의미를 가지게 되었고 20세기 초기 보존정책의 기초가 되었다. In the second half of XXth century, polycentric urban structures were transformed into unified, regularized pattern; Haussmann's comprehensive plan for Paris represented the highest expression of this process of radical renewal. In terms of Policies of Preservation, such a Planning strategy was embodied in isolated and exhibited monuments. Enhanced by late Romanticism the notion of historic environment could be considered as a reaction against uniformity and the following loss of local Individuality. This notion was also formulated, in terms of artistic perception, as an appreciation of local intrinsic -artistic, historic- values. At the beginning of the new century this attitude formed the basis of a policy of preservation. Both in Paris and Rome a similar question of conservation was set on a larger scale: it concerned the remains of ancient town. In both cases the creation of a park represented the way of combining the necessity for conservation and the needs of a modern capital city.

AUF1 promotes let-7b loading on Argonaute 2

<P>Yoon et al. discovered that RBP AU-rich-binding factor 1 (AUF1) promotes let-7b loading onto Argonaute 2 (AGO2), the catalytic component of the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). In turn, AGO2–let-7 triggered target mRNA decay.</P><P>Eukaryotic gene expression is tightly regulated post-transcriptionally by RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and microRNAs. The RBP AU-rich-binding factor 1 (AUF1) isoform p37 was found to have high affinity for the microRNA let-7b in vitro (<I>K</I><SUB>d</SUB> = ∼6 nM) in cells. Ribonucleoprotein immunoprecipitation, in vitro association, and single-molecule-binding analyses revealed that AUF1 promoted let-7b loading onto Argonaute 2 (AGO2), the catalytic component of the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). In turn, AGO2–let-7 triggered target mRNA decay. Our findings uncover a novel mechanism by which AUF1 binding and transfer of microRNA let-7 to AGO2 facilitates let-7-elicited gene silencing.</P>
