Association between a Polymorphism in miR-34b/c and Susceptibility to Cancer - a Meta-analysis
Lin, Zhuo,Chen, Li,Song, Mei,Shi, Ke-Qing,Tang, Kai-Fu Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.17
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) act as tumor suppressors or promoters in neoplasia by regulating relative geneexpression. The association between a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs4938723 in miR-34b/c and susceptibility to cancers was inconsistent in previous studies. In this study, we conducted a literature search of PubMed, Web of Science and Embase to identify all relevant studies in this meta-analysis with 6,036 cases and 6,204 controls. We found that the miR-34b/c rs4938723 polymorphism was significantly associated with increased risk of cancers in the heterozygous model (TC versus TT, OR=1.09, 95% CI=1.01-1.18, P=0.02). Subgroup analysis also revealed increased risk for Asian ethnicity in the heterozygous model (TC versus TT, OR=1.12, 95% CI=1.02-1.22, P=0.02), but decreased risk of colorectal cancer in homozygote model (CC versus TT, OR=0.66, 95% CI=0.47-0.92, P=0.02) and in the recessive model (CC versus TC+TT, OR=0.67, 95% CI=0.48-0.93, P=0.02) by cancer type. The current meta-analysis indicated that the miR-34b/c rs4938723 polymorphism may decrease susceptibility to colorectal cancer. Well-designed studies with larger sample size are required to further validate the results.

Chemical vapour deposition of two-dimensional materials typically involves the conversion of vapour precursors to solid products in a vapour-solid-solid mode. Here, we report the vapour-liquid-solid growth of monolayer MoS2, yielding highly crystalline ribbons with a width of few tens to thousands of nanometres. This vapour-liquid-solid growth is triggered by the reaction between MoO3 and NaCl, which results in the formation of molten Na-Mo-O droplets. These droplets mediate the growth of MoS2 ribbons in the 'crawling mode' when saturated with sulfur. The locally well-defined orientations of the ribbons reveal the regular horizontal motion of the droplets during growth. Using atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and second harmonic generation microscopy, we show that the ribbons are grown homoepitaxially on monolayer MoS2 with predominantly 2H-or 3R-type stacking. Our findings highlight the prospects for the controlled growth of atomically thin nano-structure arrays for nanoelectronic devices and the development of unique mixed-dimensional structures.

Targeted inhibition of tumor-derived exosomes as a novel therapeutic option for cancer
Li Ye,Chen Zhuo-Kun,Duan Xu,Zhang He-Jing,Xiao Bo-Lin,Wang Kui-Ming,Chen Gang 생화학분자생물학회 2022 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.54 No.-
Mounting evidence indicates that tumor-derived exosomes (TDEs) play critical roles in tumor development and progression by regulating components in the tumor microenvironment (TME) in an autocrine or paracrine manner. Moreover, due to their delivery of critical molecules that react to chemotherapy and immunotherapy, TDEs also contribute to tumor drug resistance and impede the effective response of antitumor immunotherapy, thereby leading to poor clinical outcomes. There is a pressing need for the inhibition or removal of TDEs to facilitate the treatment and prognosis of cancer patients. Here, in the present review, we systematically overviewed the current strategies for TDE inhibition and clearance, providing novel insights for future tumor interventions in translational medicine. Moreover, existing challenges and potential prospects for TDE-targeted cancer therapy are also discussed to bridge the gaps between progress and promising applications.
Semantic colorization with internet images
Chia, Alex Yong-Sang,Zhuo, Shaojie,Gupta, Raj Kumar,Tai, Yu-Wing,Cho, Siu-Yeung,Tan, Ping,Lin, Stephen Association for Computing Machinery 2011 ACM transactions on graphics Vol.30 No.6

Colorization of a grayscale photograph often requires considerable effort from the user, either by placing numerous color scribbles over the image to initialize a color propagation algorithm, or by looking for a suitable reference image from which color information can be transferred. Even with this user supplied data, colorized images may appear unnatural as a result of limited user skill or inaccurate transfer of colors. To address these problems, we propose a colorization system that leverages the rich image content on the internet. As input, the user needs only to provide a semantic text label and segmentation cues for major foreground objects in the scene. With this information, images are downloaded from photo sharing websites and filtered to obtain suitable reference images that are reliable for color transfer to the given grayscale photo. Different image colorizations are generated from the various reference images, and a graphical user interface is provided to easily select the desired result. Our experiments and user study demonstrate the greater effectiveness of this system in comparison to previous techniques.

Aim: To analyze the significance of different clinical factors for prognostic prediction in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients. Methods: Two hundred and twenty-seven DLBCL patients were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were managed with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP) regimen or rituximab plus the CHOP (RCHOP) regimen. Results: Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ${\beta}2$-microglobulin (${\beta}2$-M), B symptoms, Ann Arbor stage and genetic subtypes were statistically relevant in predicting the prognosis of the overall survival (OS). In the CHOP group, the OS in patients with germinal center B-cell-like (GCB)(76.2%) was significantly higher than that of the non-GCB group (51.9%, P=0.032). With RCHOP management, there was no statistical difference in OS between the GCB (88.4%) and non-GCB groups (81.9%, P=0.288). Conclusion: Elevated LDH and ${\beta}2$-M levels, positive B symptoms, Ann Arbor stage III/IV, and primary nodal lymphoma indicate an unfavorable prognosis of DLBCL patients. Patients with GCB-like DLBCL have a better prognosis than those with non-GCB when treated with the CHOP regimen. The RCHOP treatment with the addition of rituximab can improve the prognosis of patients with DLBCL.
A Novel Face Recognition Algorithm Based on Improved Retinex and Sparse Representation
Jingyi bo,Yubin Wang,Zhuo Lin 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Signal Processing, Image Vol.9 No.8
In recent years, face recognition technology has been widely used as a kind of important modern biological recognition technology. As one of the main factors that affect the recognition rate, the illumination variation has attracted the attention of many researchers. In order to improve the face recognition under illumination variation condition, a novel face recognition algorithm based on improved Retinex and sparse representation is proposed in this paper. Retinex algorithm can be used to solve the problem of face illumination variation in face recognition, but it is easy to produce ‘halo’ phenomenon. In order to improve the face recognition rate under the change of illumination condition. In this paper, firstly, in order to eliminate the interference of illumination on face recognition, we apply the Retinex that is improved by partial differential equations to face image processing. Then, sparse representation is used to extract face feature vector, and the voting method is used to realize the face recognition. Finally, the performance of the algorithm is tested by 3 standard face databases. The results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the face recognition rate under different illumination conditions, and has good robustness to illumination.

ZnO/NiO heterojunction nanofibers were synthesized by an electrostatic spinning technique in thiswork. The morphologies, crystal structures, and compositional features of the ZnO/NiO nanofiberswere analyzed by SEM, TEM, XRD, and EDS characterization. ZnO/NiO nanofibers with Zn contentsof 37.5 at% showed a 46% response to 300-ppm ammonia gas at room temperature (25 ± 1 ℃;56 ± 3% RH), with fast response and recovery behavior (100 s /25 s). The existence of p-n heterojunctionson the surface of ZnO/NiO nanofibers, as well as surface ionic conduction, improved the responseto ammonia gas in a synergistic manner.
Chemical profiling and antioxidants screening from natural products: using CiNingJi as an example
Yida Zhang,Peiyan Zheng,Guanyu Yan,Yue Zhuo,Jian-lin Wu,Baoqing Sun 한국식품과학회 2022 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.31 No.4
Natural products with good antioxidative prop- erties have been paid increased attention globally. How- ever, due to its chemical complexity, it is difficult to find out its antioxidative compounds. Herein, the chemical profiling and antioxidant capacity of CiNingJi (CNJ) were analyzed, as an example. By using UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS, a total of 82 compounds were tentatively deduced. Further- more, its free radical scavenging capacity was assessed by different in vitro spectrophotometric-based assays. The result showed that one ingredient, Rosa roxburghii, plays a critical role in its antioxidant activity. In addition, 18 potential antioxidants were screened out in CNJ by com- paring the difference of it with and without DPPH reaction. They were identified mainly as catechin, ellagic acid, kajiichigoside F1, and their derivatives or isomers. With the further quantification of major found antioxidants, our results may provide some knowledge on predicting the antioxidative compounds of natural products.
