        Intraoperative discomfort associated with the use of a rotary or reciprocating system: a prospective randomized clinical trial

        Objectives: The aim of this randomized, controlled, prospective clinical study was to evaluate patients’ intraoperative discomfort during root canal preparations in which either multi-file rotary (Mtwo) or single-file reciprocating (Reciproc) systems were used. Materials and Methods: Fifty-five adult patients, aged between 25 and 69 years old, with irreversible pulpitis or pulp necrosis participated in this study. Either the mesiobuccal or the distobuccal canals for maxillary molars and either the mesiobuccal or the mesiolingual canals for mandibular molars were randomly chosen to be instrumented with Mtwo multi-file rotary or Reciproc single-file reciprocating systems. Immediately after each canal instrumentation under anesthesia, patient discomfort was assessed using a 1 - 10 visual analog scale (VAS), ranging from ‘least possible discomfort’ (1) to ‘greatest possible discomfort’ (10). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to determine significant differences at p < 0.05. Results: Little intraoperative discomfort was found in all cases. No statistically significant differences in intraoperative discomfort between the 2 systems were found (p = 0.660). Conclusions: Root canal preparation with multi-file rotary or single-file reciprocating systems had similar and minimal effects on patients’ intraoperative discomfort.

        Hypoglycemic and Hypocholesterolemic Effects of Botryosphaeran from Botryosphaeria rhodina MAMB-05 in Diabetes-Induced and Hyperlipidemia Conditions in Rats

        Botryosphaeran, a water-soluble exopolysaccharide of the ${\beta}-(1{\rightarrow}3;1{\rightarrow}6)$-D-glucan type that has been isolated from the culture medium of Botryosphaeria rhodina MAMB-05 grown in submerged fermentation using glucose as the sole carbon source, was previously demonstrated to be non-genotoxic in peripheral blood and bone marrow, and exhibited strong anticlastogenic activity. In the present study, the effects of botryosphaeran were investigated in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats as well as in high-fat diet-fed hyperlipidemic Wistar rats. The plasma glucose level was reduced by 52% in the diabetic group of rats after administration of 12 mg botryosphaeran/kg body weight of the rats (b.w.)/day by gavage over 15 days. A reduction in the median ration intake was accompanied by an increase in the median body weight gain, as well as the efficiency of food conversion. These results demonstrate that botryosphaeran has protective effects by reducing the symptoms of cachexia in Diabetes mellitus. Botryosphaeran administered by gavage at a concentration of 12 mg botryosphaeran/kg b.w./day over 15 days also reduced the plasma levels of total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol by 18% and 27%, respectively, in hyperlipidemic rats. Based on these findings, we conclude that botryosphaeran possesses hypoglycemic and hypocholesterolemic properties in conditions of diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia, respectively, and may be used as an oral anti-diabetic agent.

      • Edge-Functionalized Graphene Nanoribbon Encapsulation To Enhance Stability and Control Kinetics of Hydrogen Storage Materials

        <P>Hydrogen is a long-term clean energy carrier that enables completely carbon-free energy production. However, practical implementation of hydrogen fuel technologies is restricted because of lack of safe and high-performing storage materials. Here, we report Mg nanocrystals encapsulated by narrow, bottom-up synthesized graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) as environmentally stable and high-capacity hydrogen storage materials. As an encapsulation medium, GNRs offer similar functionalities as reduced graphene oxide to protect the encapsulated Mg nanocrystals from extensive oxidation, while allowing penetrations of hydrogen. In addition, the GNRs can be edge functionalized to tune the (de-)hydrogenation kinetics, in particular for the processes occurred at the GNR-Mg interfaces. In this work, four different types of edge-functional groups were introduced into GNRs with the goal of comparing their cycling performances because of edge functionalization. On the basis of detailed kinetic analysis coupled with first-principles calculations, we propose that edge-functional groups can contribute to the reduction of kinetic barriers for surface hydrogen reactions at the interface with the GNR by stabilizing surface defects. Furthermore, the GNR-Mg composite exhibited higher hydrogen storage capacity (7.1 wt % of hydrogen based on the total composite) compared with the current literature while demonstrating long-term air stability. This work suggests that the rational design of edge-functional groups in graphene derivatives can provide a general and novel paradigm for simultaneous encapsulation and hydrogen storage catalysis in simple metal or complex metal nanocrystals.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Apical root canal cleaning after preparation with endodontic instruments: a randomized trial in vivo analysis

        Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate vital pulp tissue removal from different endodontic instrumentation systems from root canal apical third in vivo. Materials and Methods: Thirty mandibular molars were selected and randomly divided into 2 test groups and one control group. Inclusion criteria were a positive response to cold sensibility test, curvature angle between 10 and 20 degrees, and curvature radius lower than 10 mm. Root canals prepared with Hero 642 system (size 45/0.02) (n = 10) and Reciproc R40 (size 40/0.06) (n = 10) and control (n = 10) without instrumentation. Canals were irrigated only with saline solution during root canal preparation. The apical third was evaluated considering the touched/untouched perimeter and area to evaluate the efficacy of root canal wall debridement. Statistical analysis used t-test for comparisons. Results: Untouched root canal at cross-section perimeter, the Hero 642 system showed 41.44% ± 5.62% and Reciproc R40 58.67% ± 12.39% without contact with instruments. Regarding the untouched area, Hero 642 system showed 22.78% ± 6.42% and Reciproc R40 34.35% ± 8.52%. Neither instrument achieved complete cross-sectional root canal debridement. Hero 642 system rotary taper 0.02 instruments achieved significant greater wall contact perimeter and area compared to reciprocate the Reciproc R40 taper 0.06 instrument. Conclusions: Hero 642 achieved higher wall contact perimeter and area but, regardless of instrument size and taper, vital pulp during in vivo instrumentation is not entirely removed.
