Subject-dependent Inversion in English: A Corpus-based Investigation
Yujiao Feng,Jong-Bok Kim(김종복) 한국언어학회 2021 언어 Vol.46 No.4
Subject-dependent inversion is one of the inverted constructions in which the complement of the copula be is preposed to the left of the main verb, whereas the grammatical subject is placed in the postverbal position. The inversion is constrained by the relative discourse familiarity of information represented by the preposed and postposed phrases. In addition, the principle of end-weight also plays a role in the felicity of inversion. This paper reviews some key properties of the predicate inversion in English and investigates their real-life uses with the corpus COCA (Contemporary Corpus of American English). Based on the attested data, the paper also sketches a theoretical direction that can account for its intriguing grammatical properties.
