      • “Eat What You Want and Be Healthy!” Comfort Food Effects: Human-Food Interaction in View of Celebratory Technology

        Food craving is one of the fundamental desires of human nature. Many HCI researchers used to define this desire as a problem and have developed its corrective technology. However, positive aspects of food craving and food reward has rarely been in the scope of research. Few studies made its efforts to evaluate how food positively interacts with mental aspects of humans but have shown inconsistent results because of user subjectivity and environmental variations. Therefore, we have evaluated the human-food interactions with an EEG as objective indicator to track the mental activity. We found that when participants have a high craving for the certain food, which makes them feel comfort (hereafter comfort food), their working memory performance and related theta signal increase and stress related high beta signal decrease. The methodology adopted in this study will contribute to the progress in food-related celebratory technologies in HCI research field.

      • IoT & Python based Measurement and Analysis of Lighting Color temperature and Illuminance for Human-centric Lighting Control

        For the near future, the color temperature and illuminance of the networkable and dimmable LED or OLED luminaire will be manually or autonomously controlled for the human-centric lighting. The decision of level for dimming and color temperature is essential required to human-centric lighting under the various environment. Before predicting and deciding the level, the color temperature and ambient light under the various office environment should be measured during specific periods to understand the lighting environment around human. This paper proposes the state of art measurement based on IoT (Internet of Things) including the cloud computing. The color temperature and ambient light or illuminance is sensed, transferred to the cloud server, gathered as big data, and analyzed in the cloud computing with Python. The result provides the correlation of color temperature and illuminance between the lighting of the office work place around human and the daylight around window with analyzing big data.

        취업모의 완벽주의와 양육행동 간의 관계: 일-가정 갈등과 양육죄책감의 이중매개효과

        This study examined the double mediating effects of work-family conflict and parenting guilt on the relationship between perfectionism and parenting behavior for working mothers. The survey was conducted on 340 working mothers with 3 to 5 year-old children, who lived in Daegu and Kyungpook Province, Korea. Data were collected through questionnaires on perfectionism, work-family conflict, parenting guilt, and parenting behavior. To analyze the collected data, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and analysis of variance were conducted by using SPSS 22.0 and Model 6 in PROCESS macro, with bootstrapping method. Work-family conflict and parenting guilt were used as mediators. Children’s birth order and household income were controlled throughout the analysis. The major findings of this study were as follows. First, work-family conflict and parenting guilt had inconsistent double mediating effects on the relationship between adaptive perfectionism and positive parenting behavior. Second, work-family conflict and parenting guilt had complete double mediating effects on the relationship between adaptive perfectionism and negative parenting behavior. Third, work-family conflict and parenting guilt did not have double mediating effects on the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and positive parenting behavior. Finally, work-family conflict and parenting guilt had partial double mediating effects on the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and negative parenting behavior. The findings provide a better understanding of the relationship between perfectionism and parenting behavior. The results also have implications for providing education for and counseling working mothers with children.

        The Distribution of Multidrug-resistant Microorganisms and Treatment Status of Hospital-acquired Pneumonia/Ventilator-associated Pneumonia in Adult Intensive Care Units: a Prospective Cohort Observational Study

        Background: It is essential to determine the distribution of the causative microorganisms in the region and the status of local antibiotic resistance for the proper treatment of hospitalacquired pneumonia/ventilator-associated pneumonia (HAP/VAP). This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and causative strains of HAP/VAP, distribution of resistant bacteria, use of antibiotics, and the ensuing outcomes of patients in Korea. Methods: A multicenter prospective observational cohort study was conducted among patients with HAP/VAP admitted to the medical intensive care unit of 5 tertiary referral centers between August 2012 and June 2015. Patients' demographic and clinical data were collected. Results: A total of 381 patients were diagnosed with HAP/VAP. Their median age was 69 (59–76) years and 71% were males. A majority of the patients (88%) had late-onset (> 5 days) HAP/VAP. One-quarter of the patients (n = 99) had at least one risk factor for multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, such as prior intravenous antibiotic use within the last 90 days. Microbiological specimens were mostly obtained noninvasively (87%) using sputum or endotracheal aspirates. Pathogens were identified in 235 (62%) of the 381 patients. The most common bacterial pathogen was Acinetobacter baumannii (n = 89), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (n = 52), Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 25) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n = 22). Most of isolated A. baumannii (97%) and S. aureus (88%) were multidrug resistant. The most commonly used empirical antibiotic regimens were carbapenem-based antibiotics (38%), followed by extended-spectrum penicillin/ β-lactamase inhibitor (34%). Glycopeptide or linezolid were also used in combination in 54% of patients. The 28-day mortality rate of the patients with HAP/VAP was 30% and the 60-day mortality was 46%. Patients who used empirical antibiotics appropriately had significantly lower mortality rates than those who did not (28-day mortality: 25% vs. 40%, P = 0.032; 60- day mortality: 41% vs. 55%, P = 0.032, respectively). Administration of appropriate empirical antibiotics (odds ratio [OR], 0.282; confidence interval [CI], 0.092–0.859; P = 0.026), Day 7 treatment failure (OR, 4.515; CI, 1.545–13.192; P = 0.006), and APACHE II score on day 1 (OR, 1.326; CI, 0.988–1.779; P = 0.012) were the factors that determined the 28-day mortality in patients with HAP who had identified bacteria as pathogens. Conclusion: In HAP/VAP patients, there was a large burden of MDR pathogens, and their associated mortality rate was high. Proper selection of empirical antibiotics was significantly associated with the patient's prognosis; however, there was a discrepancy between major pathogens and empirical antibiotic therapy.

        한글 간판 디자인 선호도에 대한 탐색적 연구

        (연구배경 및 목적) 본 연구는 종로구청이 진행하고 있는 간판 디자인 개선 사례로부터 영문 브랜드 간판 디자인과 개선한 한글 간판 디자인을 비교하여 흥미 정도와 선호 정도의 차이를 측정한 것이다. 이는 범람하고 있는 영문 브랜드 간판 디자인 속에서 고군분투하는 한글 간판 디자인의 현주소를 확인하고 향후 한글 간판 디자인 개선에 있어 필요한 논의를 이끌고자 함이다. (연구방법) 연구 대상은 서울특별시 종로구에 있는 영문 브랜드 간판 중에서 한글 간판 디자인 사례를 중심으로 하며, 개선 이전에 설치되었던 영문 간판 디자인과 개선 이후에 설치된 한글 간판 디자인을 실험 연구의 범위로 택했다. 특히 음료(커피 전문점), 전자·통신(대리점 포함), 제과·식품의 업종별 간판 디자인을 총 18개로 선정한 후, 간판 디자인의 흥미 정도와 선호 정도를 측정하기 위해 정서적 주의도, 조형적 호감도, 이지적 선호도를 묻는 설문 조사를 단행했다. 측정에 사용한 의미 분별 척도는 국어형용사 의미 분류 방법에 따라 상관적 형용사와 비상관적 형용사에서 총 6개를 추출하여 양 끝 척도로 완성했다. (결과) 분석 결과, 영문 브랜드 간판 디자인이 정서적 주의도, 조형적 호감도, 이지적 선호도에서 우세했으나 한글 간판 디자인과 비교했을 때 그 차이가 현격히 두드러진다고 볼 수 없었다. 특히 KT, 올레, 배스킨 라빈스, 던킨 도너츠의 한글 간판 디자인은 영문 브랜드 간판 디자인과 비교했을 때 그 차이 값이 척도 반 개 정도에 해당했다. 이것은 한글 간판 디자인으로 개선했을 때 브랜드의 정체성에 영향을 미칠지도 모른다는 선입견이나 편견이 기우에 불과하다고 해석할 수 있다. 그러나 조형적 호감도를 묻는 문항에서 한글 간판 디자인에 대한 호감도는 10대~30대 여성의 값과 40대 이상 남성의 값이 두 집단으로 나뉘어 대립하는 양상을 보였다. 즉, 같은 한글 간판 디자인(던킨 도너츠, 배스킨 라빈스)을 보고도 10대~30대의 연령층은 `촌스럽다`는 응답률이 높았으나 40대 이상 남성 연령층에서는 `세련되다`는 응답률이 더 높게 나왔다. 이와 같은 결과를 볼 때 해당 문항은 연령층에 따라 다른 해석의 차이가 나타나고 있었다. (결론) 이번 연구에서는 한글 간판 디자인과 영문 간판 디자인의 호감 정도와 선호 정도가 브랜드마다 다르지만, 그 차이가 크지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 영문 브랜드 간판을 한글 간판으로 개선할 때 연령층에 따라 다른 해석의 차이를 보이므로 인구통계학적 의미 해석의 문제를 조율하기 위한 평가 도구 개발이 시급하다는 점도 파악되었다. 그러므로 더욱 과학적인 간판 디자인 평가를 위한 도구 개발과 아름다운 한글 간판 디자인의 요건을 파악하기 위한 연구가 향후 과제로 남는다. (Background and Purpose) This study compared English signboards to Korean-language signboards based on the improvement of signboard design launched by Jongno-gu Office, and measured differences in interest and preference. The ultimate goal is to examine the current status of Korean-language signboards amidst a flood of English ones and bring up discussion on improving Korean-language signboards. (Method) For this study, cases of participating in the Korean-language signboard design improvement program in Jongno-gu, Seoul were analyzed. In terms of scope, English signboards installed prior to this program and Korean-language ones installed after the program began were compared. In particular, 18 different signboard designs were selected by business type: beverage (coffee shop), electronics and telecommunication (agencies included), and bakery and food. To measure the level of interest in and preferences for signboard design, a questionnaire survey covering emotional attention, formative liking, and intellectual preference was given. For scale of measurement, six words were extracted from correlative and non-correlative adjectives, according to the Korean Adjective Meaning Classification Method, and the semantic differential was completed. (Results) The study results found the following: English signboards were superior in emotional attention, formative liking, and intellectual preference. When compared to Korean-language ones, however, no considerable difference was found. In KT, Ollie, Baskin Robbins, and Dunkin` Donuts, in particular, the difference between English and Korean signboards was as small as a half scale. In other words, there is no evidence that Korean-language signboards have a negative effect on brand identity. In questions about formative liking, however, liking of Korean-language signboards was divided into two groups: women ages 10 to 39, and men aged 40 or older. Specifically, those in the 10-39 group said that Korean-language signboards (Dunkin` Donuts, Baskin Robbins) were “corny,” while men in their 40s or older responded that they looked “refined.” In other words, different responses were observable by age. (Conclusions) This study confirmed that even though there is some difference in liking and preference between Korean-language and English signboards, it is not very large. Furthermore, different responses were found by age when English signboards were redesigned into Korean-language ones. Therefore, it is urgent to develop an assessment tool to coordinate a matter of interpreting demographic meanings. In sum, it is necessary to develop a tool to assess signboard design in a more scientific manner and investigate the requirements for more beautiful Korean-language signboards in future studies.
