Fabrication of bulk alloy has been performed through the consolidation of rapidly solidified ribbons. The bulk alloy exhibited excellent mechanical properties, high tensile yield strength of 530 MPa, and large elongation of 3 %. Microstructure of the alloy was characterized by equiaxed fine grains that consist of -Mg, long period ordered (LPO) structure phase, and -type cubic compound. The strengthening of the alloys may be due to fine grains with LPO structure phase and -type compound.
Flow visualization and numerical analysis of a new mixing equipment with vibratory fins

The mixing performance of a new type of mixing equipment which has several fin oscillators on a pair of shafts with a vibrating motor was investigated. This mixing equipment, which is mainly used for industrial plating processes, was usually operated at a vibrating frequency of about 40 Hz with the amplitude 1mm. The flow visualization in this equipment showed that the flow in the vessel at laminar flow region was vertically divided into two distinct symmetric regions. The numerical simulation of the flow and the mixing patterns agreed well with the visualization result at laminar flow region.

Background: The requisite anesthetic concentration of sevoflurane required to obtain adequate sedation when sufficient analgesics are supplied has not been determined. The purpose of this study was to determine the requisite age-associated concentration of sevoflurane to obtain an adequate level of anesthesia during combined epidural-general anesthesia by bispectral index (BIS) monitoring. Methods: Twenty-seven elective abdominal surgery patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I-II) were enrolled. The patients were divided into two groups of more or less than 60 years of age. We investigated the concentration of sevoflurane required to obtain an adequate sedation level during combined epidural-general anesthesia, maintaining the BIS value between 40 and 60. Results: The requisite sevoflurane concentration required to keep the BIS value at 40-60 was not stable during surgery. In the younger group, the maximum concentration of sevoflurane needed during surgery was 1.95 ± 0.14 (95% confidence interval: 1.87-2.10) vol%, while it was 1.54 ± 0.44 (95% confidence interval: 1.27-1.80) vol% in the older group (P < 0.01). Conclusions: The requisite concentration of sevoflurane required with combined epidural-general anesthesia was 2.5 vol% for the younger group and 2.0 vol% for the older group as determined by BIS monitoring. We believe that these percentages are sufficient to avoid awareness during surgery with adequate analgesia.

Magnetically levitated conveying system using superconductors has a demerit that it is not able to change thelevitation height between levitated vehicle and magnetic rail. In this study, we tried to improve this demerit by applying pulsed-field magnetization to the system. We made a prototype of magnetically levitated conveying system based onnumerical analysis.

Background: Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective central α2-agonist used as a sedative in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). However, little is known about the relationship between dexmedetomidine dose and its plasma concentration during long-term infusion. We have previously demonstrated that the sedative plasma dexmedetomidine concentration is moderately correlated with the administered dose in adults (r = 0.653, P = 0.001). We hypothesized that there would be a similar relationship between the sedative dexmedetomidine concentration and administered dose in infants. Methods: All patients admitted to the PICU at Nagoya City University Hospital, Japan, between November 2012 and March 2013 were eligible for inclusion in the study. Plasma dexmedetomidine concentration was measured by ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Results: We measured the plasma dexmedetomidine concentration in 203 samples from 45 patients. Of these, 96 samples collected from 27 patients < 2 years old were included in this study. All patients received dexmedetomidine at 0.12–1.40 μg/kg/h. The median administration duration was 87.6 hours (range: 6–540 hours). Plasma dexmedetomidine concentration ranged from 0.07 to 3.17 ng/ml. Plasma dexmedetomidine concentration was not correlated with the administered dose (r = 0.273, P = 0.007). The approximate linear equation was y = 0.690x + 0.423. Conclusions: In infants, plasma dexmedetomidine concentration did not exhibit any correlation with administered dose, which is not a reliable means of obtaining optimal plasma concentration.

The main purpose of this research is 1) to establish a framework for the test development and the constructs of writing performance test, 2) to implement a developed writing performance assessment, and 3) to examine the degree of reliability and validity of the assessment tasks and rating scales. Construct-based processing approach to testing resulted in a comprehensive framework for our test development. Accuracy and communicability were defined as constructs, and the test development proceeded according to the three stages. The test was conducted as an examination into the assessment tasks and rating scales, and the analyses were done using FACETS. The results showed that 1) the difficulty of the two tasks and the impressionistic scoring were considered equivalent, which provided reasonable fit to the Rasch model, 2) the equivalence of task difficulty may indicate that task development based on constructbased processing approach could be reliable and valid to estimate students`` writing ability, and 3) the rating scales associated with the five rating categories and their specific written samples were shown to be mostly comprehensible and usable by raters, and demonstrated acceptable fit. However, there is still room for argument about the reliability and validity of assessment tasks and rating scales.
3D Face Reconstruction from a Single Image Using Machine Learning Methodology

This paper presents a method for 3D face reconstruction from a single image. To reconstruct a 3D-shape from a single image, we need to model the relationship between images and shapes. The relationship defines a function from image brightness variation to local shape variation. Some existing methods for 3D reconstruction assume a series of reflectance models that try to emulate the relationship based on physical theoretics. However, the models of the existing methods are not able to fit actual world enough. Therefore, we propose heuristic approach, which empirically learns the relationship by statistical machine learning methodology. Firstly, we create surface normal estimators by learning the relationship between image patches of brightness and true surface normals. However, these estimators make misestimation in some cases. To correct them, we additionally create surface normal correctors by learning from image patches, estimated normal patches, and true normals. We conducted some experiments for evaluating this method. These results showed efficiency of our approach.

I would like to introduce the basic methods used in clinical microbiology laboratories in Japan. As of September, 2009, there are 8,766 hospitals in Japan. However, among these, only 1,700 hospitals have a microbiology laboratory. Microbiology laboratories commonly perform diagnostic tests for acute infections such as culture of bacterial, acid-fast and fungal pathogens and antigen POCT. But in Japan, microbiology laboratories do not only report the test results to the physician, they also take an active role in the diagnosis of the cause of infection, in the selection of appropriate antibiotics and treatment options, and in the planning and implementation of infection control measures.
