The energy release rate associated with crack growth in adhesive double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens, including the effect of residual stresses, was formulated using beam theory. Because of the rotation of the asymmetric arms in the adhesive DCB specimens due to temperature change, it is necessary to correct the evaluated fracture toughness of the DCB specimens, specifically in the case of a large temperature change. This study shows that the difference between the true toughness and an apparent toughness due to the consequence of ignoring residual stresses can be calculated for a given specimen geometry and thermo-mechanical properties (e.g. coefficient of thermal expansion). The calculated difference in the energy release rates based on the present correction method is compared with that from FEM in order to verify the present correction method. The residual stress effects on the evaluation of the adhesive fracture toughness are discussed.
Characterization of Nonlinear Behaviors of CSCNT/Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Epoxy Laminates

Nonlinear mechanical behaviors of unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates using cup-stacked carbon nanotubes (CSCNTs) dispersed epoxy are evaluated and compared with those of CFRP laminates without CSCNTs. Off-axis compression tests are performed to obtain the stress-strain relations. One-parameter plasticity model is applied to characterize the nonlinear response of unidirectional laminates, and nonlinear behaviors of laminates with and without CSCNTs are compared. Clear improvement in stiffness of off-axis specimens by using CSCNTs is demonstrated, which is considered to contribute the enhancement of the longitudinal compressive strength of unidirectional laminates and compressive strength of multidirectional laminates. Finally, longitudinal compressive strengths are predicted based on a kink band model including the nonlinear responses in order to demonstrate the improvement in longitudinal strength of CFRP by dispersing CSCNTs.
Aeroservoelastic Characteristics of a Corrugated Morphing Control Surface

Aeroservoelastic characteristics of a morphing control surface with corrugated structures are investigated in this paper. The finite element structural model and the aerodynamic model with an unsteady vortex lattice method are used to analyze the aeroelastic response of a corrugated morphing control surface. The equation of motion for the corrugated morphing control surface is derived in the state-space form, and a classic LQR control technique is integrated to function the morphing structures as control surfaces. Considering the structural and control design parameters, the aeroservoelastic response of corrugated morphing control surfaces under continuous gusts is analyzed. Simulation results demonstrate that the flexible design of corrugations may lead to undesirable vibrations even with actuation control. It is also shown that the structural modes which play important roles in the lift control can change according to the structural design parameters. This work provides important insights into designing a morphing control surface with flexible structures such as corrugated structures.

Primary penile melanomas are rare tumors that represent less than 0.1% of all melanomas. We report a case of a 60-year-old Japanese male with a mucosal penile melanoma and describe an increased CD8+ T cell infiltration in brain after dacarbazine (DTIC) administration. After partial penectomy and left inguinal lymphadenectomy, he developed multiple lung, bone, spleen, brain and skin metastases. He was treated with interferon-β, DTIC and nivolumab. However, the metastases were not reduced in size. Immunohistochemistry showed an increase of CD8+ T cell infiltration and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression after the administration of DTIC, but the expression of programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) was negative. We speculate that DTIC exerted immunostimulatory effects, but nivolumab was ineffective due to the negative expression of PD-1 and/or an insufficient infiltration of CD8+ T cells. Although this is only one case, this case report could be the first step to discuss the development of effective therapies against melanoma to take advantage of the increased CD8+ T cell in-filtration elicited by chemotherapeutic agents. It would be beneficial to pay more attention to the relationship between DTIC and immune checkpoint modulators. (Ann Dermatol 28(4) 486∼490, 2016)
