Mathematics teacher quality: its distribution and relationship with student achievement in Turkey

Zeynep Ebrar Yetkiner Özel 서울대학교 교육연구소 2013 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.14 No.2

A main purpose of the present study was to investigate the distribution of qualified mathematics teachers in relation to students’ socioeconomic status (SES), as measured by parental education, among Turkish middle schools. Further, relationships between mathematics teacher quality indicators and students’ mathematics achievement were explored. Data from the 2007 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study were used. Relationships between mathematics teacher quality and students’ mathematics achievement were investigated using hierarchical linear modeling. The current study identified SES-related inequities in access to qualified mathematics teachers in Turkey. Low-SES students were more likely to be taught by mathematics teachers who had less than 3 years of experience or who did not hold a degree in mathematics or mathematics education. On the other hand, years of experience and a degree in mathematics or mathematics education were found to be substantially related to Turkish eighth-grade students’ mathematics achievement. Low-SES students’ mathematics teachers were also more likely to report a lack of confidence in their preparation to teach various mathematics contents.

Fatigue resistance, debonding force, and failure type of fiber-reinforced composite, polyethylene ribbon-reinforced, and braided stainless steel wire lingual retainers in vitro

Foek, Dave Lie Sam,Yetkiner, Enver,Ozcan, Mutlu The Korean Association Of Orthodontists 2013 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.43 No.4

Objective: To analyze the fatigue resistance, debonding force, and failure type of fiber-reinforced composite, polyethylene ribbon-reinforced, and braided stainless steel wire lingual retainers in vitro. Methods: Roots of human mandibular central incisors were covered with silicone, mimicking the periodontal ligament, and embedded in polymethylmethacrylate. The specimens (N = 50), with two teeth each, were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10/group) according to the retainer materials: (1) Interlig (E-glass), (2) everStick Ortho (E-glass), (3) DentaPreg Splint (S2-glass), (4) Ribbond (polyethylene), and (5) Quad Cat wire (stainless steel). After the recommended adhesive procedures, the retainers were bonded to the teeth by using flowable composite resin (Tetric Flow). The teeth were subjected to 10,00,000 cyclic loads (8 Hz, 3 - 100 N, $45^{\circ}$ angle, under $37{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ water) at their incisoproximal contact, and debonding forces were measured with a universal testing machine (1 mm/min crosshead speed). Failure sites were examined under a stereomicroscope (${\times}40$ magnification). Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Results: All the specimens survived the cyclic loading. Their mean debonding forces were not significantly different (p > 0.05). The DentaPreg Splint group (80%) showed the highest incidence of complete adhesive debonding, followed by the Interlig group (60%). The everStick Ortho group (80%) presented predominantly partial adhesive debonding. The Quad Cat wire group (50%) presented overlying composite detachment. Conclusions: Cyclic loading did not cause debonding. The retainers presented similar debonding forces but different failure types. Braided stainless steel wire retainers presented the most repairable failure type.

Nasogastric tube placement into the hepaticojejunostomy anastomosis in pancreaticoduodenectomy

        Bulent Kaya,Yetkin Ozcabi,Iksan Tasdelen,Ender Onur,Kemal Memisoglu 한국간담췌외과학회 2016 한국간담췌외과학회지 Vol.20 No.2

Hepaticojejunostomy is an important part of many surgical procedures including pancreaticoduodenectomy. Biliary leakage from hepaticojejunostomy may be associated with intraabdominal abscess formation, biliary peritonitis, and even mortality. A 72-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital with obstructive jaundice. After initial evaluation, she was diagnosed with distal common bile duct obstruction without accurate diagnosis. Before planned pancreaticoduodenectomy, biliary drainage with a T-tube was performed due to the presence of cholangitis. After the first operation, pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed. Postinflammatory changes around the hilar region made the hepaticojejunostomy risky. A bilio-digestive anastomosis was performed using a new technique. A nasogastric tube was placed into the common bile duct proximal to the anastomosis. The postoperative course of the patient was uneventful. The use of a nasogastric tube as a stent in risky hepaticojejunostomies is a simple technique that can be beneficial.

2-absorbing δ-semiprimary Ideals of Commutative Rings

Celikel, Ece Yetkin Department of Mathematics 2021 Kyungpook mathematical journal Vol.61 No.4

Let R be a commutative ring with nonzero identity, 𝓘(𝓡) the set of all ideals of R and δ : 𝓘(𝓡) → 𝓘(𝓡) an expansion of ideals of R. In this paper, we introduce the concept of 2-absorbing δ-semiprimary ideals in commutative rings which is an extension of 2-absorbing ideals. A proper ideal I of R is called 2-absorbing δ-semiprimary ideal if whenever a, b, c ∈ R and abc ∈ I, then either ab ∈ δ(I) or bc ∈ δ(I) or ac ∈ δ(I). Many properties and characterizations of 2-absorbing δ-semiprimary ideals are obtained. Furthermore, 2-absorbing δ1-semiprimary avoidance theorem is proved.

ON 2-ABSORBING PRIMARY IDEALS IN COMMUTATIVE RINGS

        Badawi, Ayman,Tekir, Unsal,Yetkin, Ece Korean Mathematical Society 2014 대한수학회보 Vol.51 No.4

Let R be a commutative ring with $1{\neq}0$. In this paper, we introduce the concept of 2-absorbing primary ideal which is a generalization of primary ideal. A proper ideal I of R is called a 2-absorbing primary ideal of R if whenever $a,b,c{\in}R$ and $abc{\in}I$, then $ab{\in}I$ or $ac{\in}\sqrt{I}$ or $bc{\in}\sqrt{I}$. A number of results concerning 2-absorbing primary ideals and examples of 2-absorbing primary ideals are given.

Let R be a commutative ring with $1{\neq}0$. In this paper, we introduce the concept of weakly 2-absorbing primary ideal which is a generalization of weakly 2-absorbing ideal. A proper ideal I of R is called a weakly 2-absorbing primary ideal of R if whenever a, b, $c{\in}R$ and $0{\neq}abc{\in}I$, then $ab{\in}I$ or $ac{\in}\sqrt{I}$ or $bc{\in}\sqrt{I}$. A number of results concerning weakly 2-absorbing primary ideals and examples of weakly 2-absorbing primary ideals are given.

        On weakly $S$-prime submodules

        Hani A. Khashan,Ece Yetkin Celikel 대한수학회 2022 대한수학회보 Vol.59 No.6

Let $R$ be a commutative ring with a non-zero identity, $S$ be a multiplicatively closed subset of $R$ and $M$ be a unital $R$-module. In this paper, we define a submodule $N$ of $M$ with $(N:_{R}M)\cap S=\emptyset$ to be weakly $S$-prime if there exists $s\in S$ such that whenever $a\in R$ and $m\in M$ with $0\neq am\in N$, then either $sa\in(N:_{R}M)$ or $sm\in N$. Many properties, examples and characterizations of weakly $S$-prime submodules are introduced, especially in multiplication modules. Moreover, we investigate the behavior of this structure under module homomorphisms, localizations, quotient modules, cartesian product and idealizations. Finally, we define two kinds of submodules of the amalgamation module along an ideal and investigate conditions under which they are weakly $S$-prime.

Late Coronary Aneurysm Formation after Kawasaki Disease: a Review of Mechanistic and Clinical Aspects

        Kenan Yalta,Tulin Yalta,Ertan Yetkin,Cihan Ozturk 대한심장학회 2021 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.51 No.10

In patients with Kawasaki disease (KD), evolution of coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs) generally emerges within the first few weeks after disease onset. However, CAA formation in these patients might occasionally arise as a late-onset phenomenon after a long latent period. Characteristically, late CAAs manifest as new-onset vascular pathologies or expansion of long-stable CAAs on coronary imaging modalities, and might have diverse mechanistic and clinical implications. Accordingly, the present paper aims to focus on late CAA formation and its implications in the setting of KD.
