The present article briefly overviews the plan for a new project on joint technology for HTS wires/cables and describes the development plan for the world's highest field NMR magnet, which is a major development item in the project. For full-fledged social implementation of superconducting devices, high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire is a key technology since they can be cooled by liquid nitrogen and they can generate a super-high magnetic field of >>24 T at liquid helium temperatures. However, one of the major drawbacks of the HTS wires is their availability only in short lengths of a single piece of wire. This necessitates a number of joints being installed in superconducting devices, resulting in a difficult manufacturing process and a large joint resistance. In Japan, a large-scale project has commenced, including two technical demonstration items: (i) Development of superconducting joints between HTS wires, which are used in the world's highest field 1.3 GHz (30.5 T) NMR magnet in persistent current mode; the joints performance is evaluated based on NMR spectra for proteins. (ii) Development of ultra-low resistive joints between DC superconducting feeder cables for railway systems. The project starts a new initiative of next generation super-high field NMR development as well as that of realization of better superconducting power cables.
An alternative spliced mouse presenilin-2 mRNA encodes a novel γ-secretase inhibitor

The γ-secretase, composed of presenilin-1 (PS1) or presenilin-2 (PS2), nicastrin (NCT), anterior pharynx-defective phenotype 1 (APH-1), and PEN-2, is critical for the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). PSs are autoproteolytically cleaved, producing an N-terminal fragment (NTF) and a hydrophilic loop domain-containing C-terminal fragment. However, the role of the loop domain in the γ-secretase complex assembly remains unknown. Here, we report a novel PS2 isoform generated by alternative splicing, named PS2β, which is composed of an NTF with a hydrophilic loop domain. PS2β disturbed the interaction between NCT and APH-1, resulting in the inhibition of amyloid-β production. We concluded that PS2β may inhibit γ-secretase activity by affecting the γ-secretase complex assembly. Adsorption and Reaction of CO and NO on Ir(111) Under Near Ambient Pressure Conditions
Ueda, K.,Suzuki, K.,Toyoshima, R.,Monya, Y.,Yoshida, M.,Isegawa, K.,Amemiya, K.,Mase, K.,Mun, B. S.,Arman, M. A. Springer Science + Business Media 2016 Topics in catalysis Vol.59 No.5
<P>The adsorption and reaction of CO and NO on Ir(111) have been studied by near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) together with low-energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and mass spectroscopy (MS). Under both ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) and NAP conditions CO molecules occupy on-top sites of the Ir(111) surface at room temperature (RT) by forming two-dimensional clusters. Exposure to NO under UHV conditions at RT induces partially dissociative adsorption, while NAP NO exposure leads to a Ir(111) surface that is covered by molecular NO. We conducted in-operando NAP-XPS/MS observation of the NO + (CO)-C-13 reaction under a NAP condition as a function of temperature. Below 210 degrees C adsorption of NO is inhibited by CO, while above 210 degrees C the CO inhibition is released due to partial desorption of CO and dissociative adsorption of NO starts to occur leading to associative formation of N-2. Under the most active condition studied here the Ir surface is covered by a dense co-adsorption layer consisting of on-top CO, atomic N and O, which suggests that this reaction is not a NO-dissociation-limited process but a N-2/CO2 formation-limited process.</P>
Optimized Operation and Stabilization of Microgrids with Multiple Energy Resources
T.Tanabe,Y.Ueda,S.Suzuki,T.Ito,N.Sasaki,T.Tanaka,T.Funabashi,R.Yokoyama 전력전자학회 2007 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.- No.-
A microgrid supply/demand control system is proposed. In this control system, operation planning is realized based on generation and load forecasting by using artificial neural network and fuzzy systems. Unit commitment of generations includes start/stop of power generations and energy storages. Load following function is accomplished based on PI control scheme. To compensate for the power fluctuation in microgrid, power system stabilizer with EDLC is proposed..
