Amelioration of Bleomycin-induced Pulmonary Fibrosis of Rats by an Aldose Reductase Inhibitor, Epalrestat

        Xianwei Li,Yuanyuan Shen,Yining Lu,Jieren Yang 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 2015 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.19 No.5

Aldose reductase (AR) is known to play a crucial role in the mediation of diabetic and cardiovascular complications. Recently, several studies have demonstrated that allergen-induced airway remodeling and ovalbumin-induced asthma is mediated by AR. Epalrestat is an aldose reductase inhibitor that is currently available for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy. Whether AR is involved in pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis and whether epalrestat attenuates pulmonary fibrosis remains unknown. Pulmonary fibrosis was induced by intratracheal instillation of bleomycin (5 mg/kg) in rats. Primary pulmonary fibroblasts were cultured to investigate the proliferation by BrdU incorporation method and flow cytometry. The expression of AR, TGF-β1, α-SMA and collagen I was analyzed by immunohis-tochemisty, real-time PCR or western blot. In vivo, epalrestat treatment significantly ameliorated the bleomycin-mediated histological fibrosis alterations and blocked collagen deposition concomitantly with reversing bleomycin-induced expression up-regulation of TGF-β1, AR, α-SMA and collagen I (both mRNA and protein). In vitro, epalrestat remarkably attenuated proliferation of pulmonary fibroblasts and expression of α-SMA and collagen I induced by TGF-β1, and this inhibitory effect of epalrestat was accompanied by inhibiting AR expression. Knockdown of AR gene expression reversed TGF-β1-induced proliferation of fibroblasts, up-regulation of α-SMA and collagen I expression. These findings suggest that AR plays an important role in bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis, and epalrestat inhibited the progression of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis is mediated via inhibiting of AR expression.

      • CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT IN POSTING REVIEWS: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM PUBLIC VS. PAID ATTRACTIONS

        Xianwei Liu,Markus Schuckert,Rob Law 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2018 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2018 No.07

Customer online engagement is crucial to online travel websites which depend online reviews to attract new users and maintain current ones. The distinctive features of public attractions in tourism and the unique webdesign of TripAdvisor create an empirical environment for this study to explore the influence of customer experience and satisfaction on their engagement in posting reviews regarding public goods. Based on a sample of TripAdvisor-listed attractions and considering the information from over 37,000 online reviews, the empirical findings suggest that (1) customer online engagement is stronger (weaker) on paid (public) attractions, and (2) the positive effect of satisfaction on customer engagement in posting reviews is more evident among public attractions rather than paid attractions. This study concludes by offering managerial implications to regulators of public attractions, operators of travel websites, and managers of paid attractions.

      • A Trust-based Immune Strategy for File Pollution in P2P Networks

Xianwei Xu 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Security and Its Applicat Vol.9 No.11

Focusing on the file pollution problem exists in unstructured P2P file sharing systems, we propose a strategy named TrustIs by combining the trust mechanism and the immune strategy of complex network to resist the propagation of polluted files. With the help of peer reputation, trusted immune peers and backup peers can be screened out. Also, the files and indices can be identified based on their object reputation and index reputation so as to provide reference for immune pees to filter out the polluted files or indices. Meanwhile, an immune token ring network is set up for monitoring peers’ behavior and implementing the refreshment of the immune resources. The results of the simulations show that TrustIs can effectively resist the propagation of polluted files.

EFFICIENT TiO2 NANOPARTICLES/NANORODS COMPOSITE ELECTRODES FOR DYE-SENSITIZED SOLAR CELLS

        XIANWEI HUANG,PING SHEN,XIAOMING FENG,ZHUO TAN,SONGTING TAN,BIN ZHAO 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2012 NANO Vol.7 No.2

A new TiO2 nanoparticles/nanorods composite electrode was fabricated and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The TiO2 nanorods were obtained by grinding the electrospun TiO2 nanofibers mechanically. The composite photoanode of dye-sensitized solar cells was fabricated by using TiO2 nanoparticles (P25) and electrospun TiO2 nanorods. At the optimized condition, the power conversion efficiency (η) based on a triphenylamine dye (SD2) and a ruthenium dye (N719) are 8.28% and 8.80% under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW ⋅ cm-2), respectively. The results show that the electrospun TiO2 nanorods in the composite photoanode improve the physicochemical properties and enhance the photovoltaic performances of solar cells.

      • ELM-RBF Neural Networks using Micro-Genetic Algorithm for Optimization

Xianwei Xu,Sucheng Tian 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Hybrid Information Techno Vol.9 No.12

Thought Extreme Learning Machine-Radial Basis Function(ELM-RBF) can be used easily and can complete learning phase at very fast speed and provide more compact network than classical Extreme Learning Machine(ELM), it still has some room to improvement. Micro-Genetic Algorithms(uGA) improved calculated speed while inherits the Genetic Algorithms advantage of good for optimization and overall search. Considered on these, the paper designed a optimization strategy for ELM-RBF neural network based on uGA. In particular, based on classical RBF-ELM, we use real-u GA algorithm to optimize ELM-RBF hidden layer neurons center and biases value. Experiments results show that ELM-RBF-uGA has better recognition and prediction performance than classical ELM-RBF.

Hydrate Management in Deadlegs: Effect of Header Temperature on Hydrate Deposition

        Zhang, Xianwei,Lee, Bo Ram,Sa, Jeong-Hoon,Kinnari, Keijo J.,Askvik, Kjell M.,Li, Xiaoyun,Sum, Amadeu K. American Chemical Society 2017 ENERGY AND FUELS Vol.31 No.11

<P>Deadlegs in oil and gas production systems often encounter hydrate plugs by deposition. Temperature is generally known to be an important variable in hydrate formation, but the effects in deadlegs are not exactly known. This study focuses on the effects of the header temperature on the hydrate deposition in gas-filled vertical deadlegs at constant wall temperature. All experiments are conducted with a methane/ethane gas mixture at constant pressure. The pipe wall temperature is kept constant while considering different header temperatures. The tests show that the header temperature has a significant impact in the hydrate deposit growth rate and distribution in the deadleg. It is also found that the hydrate deposit can, in turn, change the temperature field inside the pipe. The header temperature or the pipe temperature field can be used to estimate the hydrate distribution in the deadleg. Under the right conditions, hydrates can form a restriction in the deadleg and its location is usually close to the boundary of a hydrate-stable region. The location of the restriction can be correlated to the header temperature. At 80 °C, the location is estimated to be 15–18 ID, and at 30 °C, the location is estimated to be 9–12 ID. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of the hydrate deposition mechanism in deadlegs.</P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ef7b02095'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
