Background: The lymph node ratio (LNR) has been shown to be an important prognostic factor for colorectal cancer. However, studies focusing on the prognostic impact of LNR in rectal cancer patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by curative resection have been limited. The aim of this study was to investigate LNR in rectal cancer patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by curative resection. Materials and Methods: A total of 131 consecutive rectal cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant CRT and total mesorectal excision were included in this study. Patients were divided into two groups according to the LNR (${\leq}0.2$ [n=86], >0.2 [n=45]) to evaluate the prognostic effect on overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results: The median number of retrieved and metastatic lymph node (LN) was 14 (range 1-48) and 2 (range 1-10), respectively. The median LNR was 0.154 (range 0.04-1.0). In multivariate analysis, LNR was shown to be an independent prognostic factor for both overall survival (hazard ratio[HR]=3.778; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.741-8.198; p=0.001) and disease-free survival (HR=3.637; 95%CI 1.838-7.195; p<0.001). Increased LNR was significantly associated with worse OS and DFS in patients with <12 harvested LNs, and as well as in those ${\geq}12$ harvested LNs (p<0.05). In addition, LNR had a prognostic impact on both OS and DFS in patients with N1 staging (p<0.001). Conclusions: LNR is an independent prognostic factor in ypN-positive rectal cancer patients, both in patients with <12 harvested LNs, and as well as in those ${\geq}12$ harvested LNs. LNR provides better prognostic value than pN staging. Therefore, it should be used as an additional prognostic indicator in ypN-positive rectal cancer patients.

Wei Zhou,Maohua Yang,Ziyu Song,Jianmin Xing 한국생물공학회 2015 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.20 No.1
A sulfate-reducing Citrobacter strain was isolatedand coated with Fe3O4/SiO2 magnetic nanoparticles(MNPs) to enhance sulfate reduction. Biolog analysisshowed that it utilizes a broad range of electron donors. The findings also showed that this bacteria strain is afacultative anaerobe and can completely reduce 12 mM ofsulfate to sulfide in 7 days under anaerobic conditions. Moreover, sulfate reduction was enhanced by 79% underoptimized conditions. Different SiO2 wrap-ratios of theMNPs attached to the cell surface were studied to optimizethe sulfate reduction: the surface of cells coated with 300%silica wrap-ratio MNPs showed the highest stability andincreased desulfurization batch time, with a 450% increasein sulfate reduction in comparison with uncoated cellscultivated in anaerobic conditions.

Zhou, Xian-Li,Wen, Qing-Wei,Lin, Xing,Zhang, Shi-Jun,Li, Ying-Xin,Guo, You-Jia,Huang, Ren-Bin 대한약학회 2014 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.37 No.5
A new phenylethanoid glycoside, named taraffinisoside A (1), together with five known glycosides were isolated from the stems and leaves of Tarphochlamys affinis. The structure of taraffinisoside A was identified on the basis of detailed spectral analysis. Compounds 1-4 and 6 showed potent antioxidant activities with $IC_{50}$ values of 10.36, 19.73, 43.95, 15.30 and $46.04{\mu}M$ by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl radical-scavenging assay. Compounds 1, 2 and 4 showed anti-HBV activities, with $IC_{50}$ values of 0.50, 0.72 and 0.26 mM for HBsAg and 0.93, 0.42 and 0.07 mM for HBeAg, respectively.
Assessment of the crest cracks of the Pubugou rockfill dam based on parameters back analysis
Zhou, Wei,Li, Shao-Lin,Ma, Gang,Chang, Xiao-Lin,Cheng, Yong-Gang,Ma, Xing Techno-Press 2016 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.11 No.4
The crest of the Pubugou central core rockfill dam (CCRD) cracked in the first and second impounding periods. To evaluate the safety of the Pubugou CCRD, an inversion analysis of the constitutive model parameters for rockfill materials is performed based on the in situ deformation monitoring data. The aim of this work is to truly reflect the deformation state of the Pubugou CCRD and determine the causes of the dam crest cracks. A novel real-coded genetic algorithm based upon the differences in gene fragments (DGFX) is proposed. It is used in combination with the radial based function neural network (RBFNN) to perform the parameters back analysis. The simulated settlements show good agreements with the monitoring data, illustrating that the back analysis is reasonable and accurate. Furthermore, the deformation gradient of the dam crest has been analysed. The dam crest has a great possibility of cracking due to the uncoordinated deformation, which agrees well with the field investigation. The deformation gradient decreases to the value lower than the critical one and reaches a stable state after the second full reservoir.

In order to determine the susceptibility of Ipomoea cairica to herbivory, the compensatory growth and photosynthetic characteristics of I. cairica plants were measured after simulated herbivory by leaf trimming in three patterns: leaf-apex removal, leaf-edge removal, and perforation. The leaf-edge removal resulted in a significantly reduced total biomass and root biomass of the plants, but the leaf-apex removal and perforation had no significant influence on the plant growth. The defoliation patterns had significant effects on the photosynthesis of I. cairica. The net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of the plants whose leaf edges had been removed were the highest among the three defoliation patterns and the fraction of absorbed light that is used in Photosystem II photochemistry increased greatly, while the fraction of light energy that is dissipated thermally decreased. The increased photosynthetic rate as a result of the leaf-edge removal treatment could be attributed to a decrease in stomatal limitation and an increase in the Rubisco content, as well as higher photosynthetic efficiency and less light energy being dissipated as heat. Increased photosynthesis in the plants whose leaf edges had been removed changed the carbon allocation and resulted in less root development. As the expansion of I. cairica primarily depends on clonal growth, smaller roots could limit its uptake of nutrients from the soil. These direct and indirect effects indicate that leaf-edgefeeding herbivores could have potential in the biological control of I. cairica.

Hua-Wei Lv,Qiao-Liang Wang,Meng Luo,Meng-Di Zhu,Hui-Min Liang,Wen-Jing Li,Hai Cai,Zhong-Bo Zhou,Hong Wang,Sheng-Qiang Tong,Xing-Nuo Li 대한약학회 2023 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.46 No.4
Prenylated flavonoids are a special kind of flavonoid derivative possessing one or more prenyl groups in the parent nucleus of the flavonoid. The presence of the prenyl side chain enriched the structural diversity of flavonoids and increased their bioactivity and bioavailability. Prenylated flavonoids show a wide range of biological activities, such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, cardioprotective effects, and anti-osteoclastogenic activities. In recent years, many compounds with significant activity have been discovered with the continuous excavation of the medicinal value of prenylated flavonoids, and have attracted the extensive attention of pharmacologists. This review summarizes recent progress on research into natural active prenylated flavonoids to promote new discoveries of their medicinal value.
