White Ⅲ, Lynn T. The Institute for Far Eastern Studies, Kyungnam Un 1999 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.23 No.4
The article treats Taiwan's links to the world under four headings: trade and investment, beliefs and styles, national identity, and military security. The island's traders profit from inexpensive labor clsewhere in Asia and large markets in democracies, its people increasingly adopt comoplitan global styles along with localist identities, and its diplomats and strategists fear that external threats from China may not be deterred by external help with defense. Taiwan's globalization has been fast in terms of both norms and situations, but its future is uncertain.

Language, culture, and emotion discrimination
White, Ilsun M,이재근 한국영어교과교육학회 2012 영어교과교육 Vol.11 No.1
Behaving appropriately in social situations requires the ability to discriminate emotional cues (facial or verbal) accurately. This research examined differences in discrimination of emotions due to age and culture, using the Diagnostic Analysis of Nonverbal Behavior (DANVA2), which consists of four subsets of tests with faces and voices of adults and children. A total of 102 subjects participated in the study. Subjects were college students and senior volunteers in Morehead, Kentucky and South Korea. Subjects were required to select the facial or voice expression that represented one of four emotional categories: happy, sad, angry, or fearful. Emotional accuracy decreased with age: performance of the elderly population was poorer than that of college students in both cultures. Findings suggest that the ability to discriminate emotions varies with age, the nature of the emotional stimuli (sensory modality and emotional category), and language ability.

Phenotypic plasticity was examined in the economically and ecologically important brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum in southwestern Nova Scotia, considering specifically how nutrient loading affected its vegetative and reproductive features. To determine this, we examined morphometric changes in A. nodosum from two sites receiving direct effluent impacts from a land-based finfish aquaculture facility and from two control sites, approximately 2 km away from the aquaculture facility in opposite directions. Fronds from test sites were significantly younger than from control sites (5 y vs. 8 y); however, fronds from farm sites were significantly larger (219 g vs. 90 g) because of their higher growth rates. Thalli from farm sites had greater reproductive potential, as shown by numbers of receptacle initials (797 initials vs. 281 initials). These results suggest limited nutrient inflows from land-based aquaculture may positively affect adjacent Ascophyllum populations by inducing higher growth rates. We conclude that the coordination of effluent management from land-based aquaculture with natural resource harvesting of A. nodosum may be beneficial. Further study is necessary to determine the limits of nutrient loading for this potentially beneficial outcome.

The expanding scope of interventional musculoskeletal procedures has resulted in increased pressure on general radiologists. The confidence of general radiologists in performing ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal procedures varies with their clinical exposure. This didactic review provides a methodologically and clinically oriented approach to enhancing user understanding and confidence in performing ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal procedures. The body of the text is accompanied by figures depicting the procedural approach, injection site, and labeled ultrasonography images. This paper aims to provide a teaching and bedside aid for education on and the execution of musculoskeletal procedures to ensure the provision of quality health care.

<P>We report on the first small-angle neutron scattering measurements from the flux line lattice (FLL) in the high-<I>T</I>c cuprate superconductor Sr0.9La0.1CuO2. Using a polycrystalline sample, the scattered intensity decreases monotonically with scattering angle away from the undiffracted beam, independently of the azimuthal angle around the beam. The absence of clear peaks in the intensity suggests the establishment of a highly disordered FLL within the grains. We find that the intensity distribution may be represented by the form factor for a single flux line in the London approximation, with some contribution from crystal anisotropy. Most interestingly however, we find that, over the observed field range, the temperature dependence of the diffracted intensity is best represented by s-wave pairing, with lower limits of the gap values being very similar to the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer value of Δ(0) = 1.76<I> k</I>B<I>T</I>c. However, a qualitative consideration of corrections to the observed intensity suggests that these gap values are likely to be higher, implying strong-coupling behaviour.</P>
