In recent years, devices to track children have gained popularity in the Netherlands. Research has shown that the use of tracking devices is harmful to a child’s development and invades the child’s privacy. This research seeks to analyse the condition that allows for this phenomenon to happen by asking the question: how does the securitisation of children’s safety by Dutch smartwatch manufacturers allow for the infringement of children’s right to privacy and development by parents? To answer this question, the research deployed the causal process tracing method. Securitisation Theory, creating an issue as an existential threat through rhetoric, was used to support the analysis of the causal mechanisms, which led the research to also depend on the critical discourse method. The results show that the Dutch smartwatch manufacturers emphasise the dichotomy of the “safe inside” versus the “unsafe outside” through rhetoric and functions on the smartwatch. The threats that exist in the “unsafe outside” are given utmost priority. In order to eliminate these threats and keep the child safe, parents are allowed to violate the right of children to privacy and development.
