One-pot homo- and cross-coupling reactions of arenediazonium tosylate salts bearing a halogen group have been exploited for the synthesis of biaryls and polyaryls under mild conditions. Pd(OAc)_2 has proven to be an efficient catalyst for the successful dual transformation of diazonium salts into p-quaterphenyl (3).

Smart bioresorbable polymers play a crucial role in pharmaceutical drug delivery and medical device applications. Among several bioresorbable polymers, poly lactic-co-glycolic acid and poly lactic acid are two common synthetic polymers used for various applications. Owing to their stimuli-sensitive behavior, they are called ‘smart polymers.’ Numerous commercial applications have demonstrated the effective use of bioresorbable polymer-based drug delivery systems for the treatment and diagnosis of several diseases and disorders. This review provides an overview of bioresorbable polymers as well as the associated commercial technologies and applications in the United States Food and Drug Administration-approved products and in drug delivery and medical devices.

The antinociceptive effect of chloroform extract (RCLC), semi-purified fraction (RC2) and isolated pentacyclic triterpenoid β-amyrin (BA) from the leaves of Ricinus communis in acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing, formalin-induced paw licking and hot-plate test was conducted in mice. The GC-MS study revealed that the RC2 showed the dominance of diterpenes, triterpenes, fatty acids, sterol and higher alkanes. No obvious behavioral changes, allergic reactions and mortality were observed in acute toxicity studies. Acute administration of the diazepam (1 mg/kg), RC2 (50 mg/kg) and BA (10 mg/kg) displayed mild sedation in open field test while RCLC (100 mg/kg) showed potent sedative properties. No motor incoordination and neurotoxicity was observed in rota-rod test. RCLC (100 mg/kg), RC2 (25 and 50 mg/kg) and BA (5 and 10 mg/kg) significantly inhibited the number of abdominal writhing induced by acetic acid and formalin-induced paw licking response. The central and peripheral antinociceptive effects for RCLC and RC2 in hot-plate were comparable to morphine. The administration of naloxone reversed the antinociceptive effect of morphine, RCLC and RC2 indicating the involvement of opioid receptors while BA principally showed peripheral antinociceptive effects which may be modulated via peripheral opioid receptors or protein kinase.

<B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>Trojan aptamer: A novel strategy for targeted drug delivery to cancer cells was developed through the formation of a physical conjugate (see scheme) between doxorubicin (Dox) and the A10 RNA aptamer that binds to the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA). The aptamer–Dox conjugate could efficiently bind to PSMA-expressing cells, thereby resulting in its uptake and the intracellular release of Dox. <img src='wiley_img/14337851-2006-45-48-ANIE200602251-content.gif' alt='wiley_img/14337851-2006-45-48-ANIE200602251-content'> </P>

<P>During last two decades, lithium-based glasses have been studied extensively as electrolytes for solid-state secondary batteries. For practical use, solid electrolyte must have high ionic conductivity as well as chemical, thermal and electrochemical stability. Recent progresses have focused on glass electrolytes due to advantages over crystalline solid. Glass electrolytes are generally classified into two types oxide glass and sulfide glass. Oxide glasses do not react with electrode materials and this chemical inertness is advantageous for cycle performances of battery. In this study, major effort has been focused on the improvement of the ion conductivity of nanosized LiAlTi(PO4)3 oxide electrolyte prepared by mechanical milling (MM) method. After heating at 1000 degrees C the material shows good crystallinity and ionic conductivity with low electronic conductivity. In LiTi2(PO4)3, Ti4+ ions are partially substituted by Al3+ ions by heat-treatment of Li20-Al2O3-TiO2-P2O5 glasses at 1000 degrees C for 10 h. The conductivity of this material is 1.09 x 10(-3) S/cm at room temp. The glass-ceramics show fast ion conduction and low E(a) value. It is suggested that high conductivity, easy fabrication and low cost make this glass-ceramics promising to be used as inorganic solid electrolyte for all-solid-state Li rechargeable batteries.</P>

<P>AtSFT12, an Arabidopsis Qc-SNARE protein, is localized to Golgi organelles and is involved in salt and osmotic stress responses via accumulation of Na (+) in vacuoles. To reduce the detrimental effects of environmental stresses, plants have evolved many defense mechanisms. Here, we identified an Arabidopsis Qc-SNARE gene, AtSFT12, involved in salt and osmotic stress responses using an activation-tagging method. Both activation-tagged plants and overexpressing transgenic plants (OXs) of the AtSFT12 gene were tolerant to high concentrations of NaCl, LiCl, and mannitol, whereas loss-of-function mutants were sensitive to NaCl, LiCl, and mannitol. AtSFT12 transcription increased under NaCl, ABA, cold, and mannitol stresses but not MV treatment. GFP-fusion AtSFT12 protein was juxtaposed with Golgi marker, implying that its function is associated with Golgi-mediated transport. Quantitative measurement of Na(+) using induced coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy revealed that AtSFT12 OXs accumulated significantly more Na(+) than WT plants. In addition, Na(+)-dependent fluorescence analysis of Sodium Green showed comparatively higher Na(+) accumulation in vacuoles of AtSFT12 OX cells than in those of WT plant cells after salt treatments. Taken together, our findings suggest that AtSTF12, a Golgi Qc-SNARE protein, plays an important role in salt and osmotic stress responses and functions in the salt stress response via sequestration of Na(+) in vacuoles.</P>
