The International Space Station (ISS) is extensively used for space-related research which is mainly conducted inside the station. A new small-size External Payload Platform (EPP) will be launched to the ISS and installed on the Japanese Experiment Module External Facility (JEM-EF) in by the end of 2014. This platform will be available to the scientific and industrial community world-wide on a fully commercial basis opening a new way for Korean payloads to the ISS. Payloads are launched to the ISS among the NASA resupply cargo, installed robotically and operated remotely from the ground. The EPP payload missions are extra-ordinarily fast, reliable and of low cost. The standard experiment payload size is a multiple of a 4U CubeSat. Payload mass is not limited, power only limited by the payload heat radiation capability. The data link is a USB 2.0 standard bus enabling near real-time and private data transfer. The new EPP makes the ISS available as short turn-around laboratory in space to support research. It is particularly suitable to support Earth observation and in-orbit testing of new technologies of any kind.
