A Conceptual Framework for Comprehending the Spatial and Communication Layers in R & D Laboratories

Yoo, Uoo Sang Architectural Institute of Korea 2005 Architectural research Vol.7 No.2

This study discusses "mechanisms" in a research facility, specifically focusing on the question of how we can understand what happens in the physical environment and the communication between researchers. This study attempts to address this question by examining two physical settings, before and after the move of one research-educational facility, the Institute of Paper Science and Technology. The objective of the study is to suggest conceptual models to comprehend the relationships between spatial layouts and communication. The study examines the underlying mechanism of how the levels of communication meet the layers of spatial structure. The paper has four parts. First, the preceding studies will be reviewed evoking some issues of communication and physical setting in research facilities. Second a conceptual typology in office plan will be developed providing a theoretical framework to review the spatial organization of the subject research facility, the Institute of Paper Science and Technology (IPST). Third, the spatial organization of the former building (before the move) and the present building (after the move) of IPST will be analyzed. Finally, conceptual models of the mechanism between the communication and the spatial organization will be drawn up.

      • A Study on the Characteristics of Ondol(Kang, Gudle) found in Folk Housing of Several Peoples in Northeast China

June Bong Kim,Uoo Sang Yoo 국제온돌학회 2007 International Journal of Ondol Vol.2 No.1

This study is for analyzing a house and underfloor heating systems called gudle of Korean Chinese, Manchurian and Chinese that are located in the northeast China, which is north of Korean peninsula. Thus it has the similarity and difference among the form of gudle of each folks. The basic form of gudle in Manchurian area of China differs and falls into four categories: U-shaped kang, L-shaped kang, /-shaped kang and whole gudle(gudle that is composed of the whole place). In case of U-shaped kang, it is a basic form of Manchurian and designed for protecting cold weather in northeast area. U-shaped kang has a long space that can be heated so that it enables as many as family members to sleep. It has the advantage of making the best use of space. The form of Chinese is /-shaped kang. As Chinese has traditionally lifestyle of chair sitting culture, so it has the form of tonggudle, or a room equipped with gudle unlike yoegudle that a fire was made under a stone like goindoel and is suitable for lifestyle of chair sitting culture. As for the kang of Korean Chinese, it is called gudle and has the largest in width compared with that of Manchurian and Chinese. Also, the height of gudle is much lower than other houses by about 30~40cm because Korean Chinese have been living "floor sitting culture"on gudle, which means the tradition of removing one's shoes before entering and sitting on the floor, while other folks like Manchurian has lifestyle of "chair sitting culture". Therefore the study found out that the folk housing of each tribe in the northeast China has similarity and difference at the same time. In particular, the form and size of gudle(kang) varies depending on the way of life.

      • A Study on the Sustainability in Urban Planning Theory -Focusing on Decentralized Concentration-

Lee Hyun Jun,Yoo Uoo Sang 국제온돌학회 2013 International Journal of Ondol Vol.6 No.1

Environmental problem due to environmental pollution and C02 emission has brought a strong attention on issues of sustainable urban development in urban planning area. Many urban planning researches have been argued that 'decentralized concentration' is one of the key issues for the sustainable urban spatial structure. Decentralized city is to create sustainable urban structure by realizing the supply system for urban energy efficiency through restriction of car use, proper urban density, and mixed-use. This study aims at exploring the concept of 'decentralized concentration' and comparing its characteristics of 'decentralized concentration' urban structure found in urban planning theories.

      • A Preliminary Study on North Korea's Modern Korean-style Building (Hanok) Viewed from Traditional Korean-style House Design Techniques

JuneBong Kim,Hong-Y oul Back,Uoo-Sang Yoo 국제온돌학회 2014 International Journal of Ondol Vol.7 No.1

This study explores a possibility to expend the scope of Traditional Korean-style ** ** House, or Hanok through including North Korea's Modem Korean-style building. As Korean traditional architecture is gaining more attention, we should think over how contemporary Hanok should be and establish the concept of Hanok for future generations to come. In order to do that, the traditional Hanok design techniques should be understood. Based on this, the appropriate Hanok Design and construction techniques for contemporary buildings could be found out. This study, therefore, aims at finding basic data of design techniques which can be applied to modern Hanok in South Korea and provi%Bng clues for the future Hanok design through studying Korean-style modern buildings in North Korea.

      • Azabang, a Gudle Structure of Korea

June Bong Kim,Lee Kang Man,Uoo Sang Yoo,Kim Jong Hun 국제온돌학회 2008 International Journal of Ondol Vol.3 No.1

This study is Korean traditional heating system, named 'AZABANG'. Ondol characterized by" Azabang "is dated back to 119 AD and it has approximately 2000 years history. Among various kinds of traditional radiant floor heating system, Ondol is the most reasonable and scientific one. This type of imaginative Ondol which have superior ability to keep temperature during a long period, roughly I 00 days could be attributable to the special structural pattern . The Ondol characterized by ''Azabang" represents extraordinary creativeness originated from Korean traditional culture and at the same time, it is the significant evidence that those missing historical rings, in some degree, have been connected. Therefore we well do our best to apply the scientific and reasonable concept into the real world.

      • 지역별 지역문화복지시설의 건축규모에 관한 조사분석

        신석균,유우상 광주대학교 1996 産業技術硏究 Vol.7 No.-

In Korea, the recognition of culture is growing higher by the economic growth and the enrichness of the life. The spaces and places for culture shall be constructed, according to the characteristics of regional culture by the regional goverment. This study is to analyze the building sizes of regional cutural community facility to supply the cutural facilities effectively.

      • 지역별 도서관의 건축규모에 관한 조사분석

        신석균,유우상 광주대학교 1996 産業技術硏究 Vol.7 No.-

The library is classified into public and university one in general. In Korea, the recognition of culture is growing higher by the economic growth and the enrichness of the life. The spaces and places for publi library shall be constructed, according to the characteristics of regional culture by the regional government. This study is to analyze the building sizes of the library to supply the cultural facilities effectively.
