Responsibility for the Virginia Tech Shooting
Jaesik Ha,Uche Onyebadi,Dong-Hee Shin 한국정보사회학회 2017 정보사회와 미디어 Vol.18 No.2
This study investigates how the U.S. and South Korean newspapers framed the Virginia Tech Shooting incident in 2007 in different ways. The findings demonstrate that South Korean newspapers tended to use the “individual responsibility” frame, emphasizing that the incident was a highly individualized affair. In contrast, the U.S. newspapers highlighted a perspective presenting the problem as one for society at large. In addition, the U.S. newspapers viewed the issue from the broader national perspective of college shootings in general. In contrast, South Korean newspapers put the blame on the killer. Overall, this study shows how localized socio-cultural perspectives can affect the framing of the same reality across nations.
