Employee engagement at workplace is very important for organizations, however, the motivators to keep the employees engaged vary. It has been normally observed that personality and job satisfaction has been the main causes which can motivate employees. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of changes, and the main aim of this study is to analyze the determinants of employee engagement during Covid-19 pandemic with the mediating role of Perceived organizational support and Perceived family support. Through a survey instrument, data was collected from 216 employees working at corporate offices in Hanoi, Vietnam. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was applied to test the study hypotheses using Smart-PLS. The study underlined the significant positive effect of Perceived Organizational support and Perceived Family Support on Employee Engagement. Moreover, Employee engagement also measures the indirect effects from factors such as colleague support, supervisor support, organizational support, spousal support and family members supports on Employee Engagement. Some discussions are given based on the findings of this research in comparison with findings of prior studies in different contexts. This research is evidenced in the emerging countries and Vietnam as the case study.

Discovery of Conformationally Restricted Human Glutaminyl Cyclase Inhibitors as Potent Anti-Alzheimer’s Agents by Structure-Based Design

        Hoang, Van-Hai,Ngo, Van T. H.,Cui, Minghua,Manh, Nguyen Van,Tran, Phuong-Thao,Ann, Jihyae,Ha, Hee-Jin,Kim, Hee,Choi, Kwanghyun,Kim, Young-Ho,Chang, Hyerim,Macalino, Stephani Joy Y.,Lee, Jiyoun,Choi, S American Chemical Society 2019 Journal of medicinal chemistry Vol.62 No.17

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an incurable, progressive neurodegenerative disease whose pathogenesis cannot be defined by one single element but consists of various factors; thus, there is a call for alternative approaches to tackle the multifaceted aspects of AD. Among the potential alternative targets, we aim to focus on glutaminyl cyclase (QC), which reduces the toxic pyroform of β-amyloid in the brains of AD patients. On the basis of a putative active conformation of the prototype inhibitor 1, a series of N-substituted thiourea, urea, and α-substituted amide derivatives were developed. The structure-activity relationship analyses indicated that conformationally restrained inhibitors demonstrated much improved QC inhibition in vitro compared to nonrestricted analogues, and several selected compounds demonstrated desirable therapeutic activity in an AD mouse model. The conformational analysis of a representative inhibitor indicated that the inhibitor appeared to maintain the Z-E conformation at the active site, as it is critical for its potent activity.
[FIG OMISSION]

Impact of Vocational Training on Wages of Ethnic Minority Labors in Vietnam

DO, Ha Thi Hai,MAI, Cuong Ngoc,MAI, Anh Ngoc,NGUYEN, Nui Dang,PHAM, Toan Ngoc,LE, Huong Thi Thu,TRAN, Manh Dung,VU, Tri Tuan Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.6

This research investigates the impact of vocational training on wages of ethnic minority labors in emerging countries; Vietnam is the case study. The study uses secondary data from 2014 to 2018 collected through Vietnam Household Living Standards Surveys (VHLSS) conducted by the General Statistics Office. In order to analyze the impact of vocational training on wages of ethnic minority areas in Vietnam, this research creates ethnic area variables. According to Vietnamese regulations, ethnic areas are communes of 51 different provinces, inhabited by ethnic minority people. The statistics from VHLSS in 2018, show that the proportion of labors of working age with a certificate was 22.5%. The research employs Heckman Sample Selection Model to estimate the impact of vocation training on wage of labors in ethnic minority areas. The results show that vocational training plays a crucial role in improving the wages of ethnic minorities and has a positive impact. However, apart from the achieved outcomes, vocational training and job creation for ethnic minorities are not without limitations and shortcomings. Based on the findings, some recommendations to ethnic minority labors, enterprises and the Government are proposed to encourage participation in vocational training for the purpose of promoting the efficiency of the labor market.

Elimination of Heat Problem in POF-based Daylighting Systems

        Hoang Vu,Nguyen Manh Hieu,Tran Quoc Tien,Ngoc Hai Vu,Jongbin Park,Seoyong Shin 한국조명·전기설비학회 2020 조명·전기설비학회논문지 Vol.34 No.8

Daylighting gets more attention as people seek better quality of light meanwhile saving electricity which in buildings. Fiberoptic based daylighting systems give us the freedom to provide natural light to any space in the building including north-facing rooms, basements, etc. Using plastic optical fibers (POFs) will significantly reduce costs for these systems. However, POFs are very sensitive to heat. The POF’s maximum operating temperature is 70℃. So, it is difficult to make a daylighting system using POFs that work stably in the long term. In this paper, a new method of eliminating the heat problem in POF-based daylighting systems was introduced. In the design, a UV-IR filter, a secondary optical element (SOE), and small silica optical fiber (SOF) bundles, were included so that the final temperature of the POFs becomes reduced to 56°C from 266℃ while the ambient temperature is 35℃. This result is promising enough for POF-based daylighting systems to be installed practically. Standardization of this method for a fiberoptic daylighting system will be implemented in the near future.

Antibiotic resistance is the most important factor leading to the failure of eradication regimens. This review focuses on the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori primary and secondary resistance to clarithromycin, metronidazole, amoxicillin, levofloxacin, tetracycline, and multidrug in Vietnam. We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Vietnamese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Vietnamese Biomedical databases from January 2000 to December 2016. The search terms included the following: H. pylori infection, antibiotic (including clarithromycin, metronidazole, amoxicillin, levofloxacin, tetracycline, and multidrug) resistance in Vietnam. The data were summarized in an extraction table and analyzed manually. Finally, Excel 2007 software was used to create charts. Ten studies (three studies in English and seven in Vietnamese) were included in this review. A total of 308, 412, 523, 408, 399, and 268 H. pylori strains were included in this review to evaluate the prevalence of H. pylori primary resistance to amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, levofloxacin, tetracycline, and multidrug resistance, respectively. Overall, the primary resistance rates of amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, levofloxacin, tetracycline, and multidrug resistance were 15.0%, 34.1%, 69.4%, 27.9%, 17.9% and 48.8%, respectively. Secondary resistance rates of amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, levofloxacin, tetracycline, and multidrug resistance were 9.5%, 74.9%, 61.5%, 45.7%, 23.5% and 62.3%, respectively. In Vietnam, primary and secondary resistance to H. pylori is increasing over time and affects the effectiveness of H. pylori eradication.

Abstract

Glutamyl cyclase (QC) is a promising therapeutic target because of its involvement in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. In this study, we developed novel QC inhibitors that contain 3-aminoalkyloxy-4-methoxyphenyl and 4-aminoalkyloxyphenyl groups to replace the previously developed pharmacophore. Several potent inhibitors were identified, showing IC50 values in a low nanomolar range, and were further studied for in vitro toxicity and in vivo activity. Among these, inhibitors 51 and 53 displayed the most potent AβN3pE−40-lowering effects in in vivo acute model with reasonable BBB penetration, without showing cytotoxicity and hERG inhibition. The molecular modeling analysis of 53 indicated that the salt bridge interaction and the hydrogen bonding in the active site provided a high potency. Given the potent activity and favorable BBB penetration with low cytotoxicity, we believe that compound 53 may serve as a potential candidate for anti-Alzheimer’s agents.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Determinants Influencing Information Transparency in Vietnamese Commercial Banks

NGUYEN, Minh Phuong,NGUYEN, Thi Hong Hai,HOANG, Phuong Dung,TRAN, Manh Dung,PHAM, Quang Trung Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.12

Information transparency ensures that market players all have the opportunity to access the same information to come up with their assessment of the banks' financial situation, performance and risks to reach effective investment decisions. This research is conducted to investigate the levels of impact of determinants on information transparency by examining the case studies of Vietnamese commercial banks. This study combines both qualitative and quantitative research methods, based on interviews of 32 specialists in banking, accounting and auditing fields, which were conducted to explore determinants influencing information transparency and to develop measurement scales. Then, a survey of 160 managers of commercial banks, audit firms, and accounting managers of firms who frequently had transactions with banks was carried out to investigate the statistical significance of these determinants. The results show that, out of seven determinants that have significant impacts on the banks' information transparency, commitment from banks' senior management regarding transparency in information disclosure has the highest impact, followed by state governance, auditing, information infrastructure, credit rating agencies, personnel and bank performance. Accordingly, we provide some recommendations for improving information transparency in the Vietnamese banking industry context as a case study and in emerging countries context in general.

Efforts in the Formation and Development of Nuclear Medicine in Vietnam

        Trong Khoa Mai,Cam Phuong Pham,Tien Cong Bui,Hai Binh Tran,Van Thai Pham,Manh Phuong Dao,Dinh Ha Tran 대한핵의학회 2019 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.53 No.2

The foundations of nuclear medicine in Vietnam were established from 1970. Until now, after 48 years of development, in Vietnam, we have some basic equipment including 31 SPECT, 4 SPECT/CT machines, 11 PET/CT scanners, five cyclotrons, and one nuclear reactor. Many nuclearmedicine techniques in diagnosis and treatment have been routinely performed at provincial and central level health facilities such as tumor scintigraphy, thyroid scintigraphy, bone scintigraphy, kidney scintigraphy, cardiac scintigraphy, and radio-isotope therapy with I-131 and P-32. Selective internal radiation therapy with Y-90 microsphere and I-125 radioactive seed implantation has been also successfully applied in some big hospitals. However, there are still many difficulties for Vietnam as the lack of new widely used radioisotopes such as Ga-67, Cu-64, Samarium-153, and Lutetium-177 and the lack of nuclear medicine specialists. In the future, we are putting our efforts on the applications of new isotopes in diagnosis and treatment of cancers (theranostic) like Ga-68-DOTATATE, Lutetium-177-DOTATATE, Ga-68-PSMA, and Lutetium-177-PSMA, equipping modern nuclear medicine diagnostic tools, strengthening the human resources training in nuclear medicine. At the same time, we are trying our best to strengthen the cooperation with international nuclear medicine societies in over the world.
