Metaphors of Interpersonal Relationship: A Case from Japanese
Toshio Ohori,Makiko Mizuno,Satoru Uchida,Anita Nagy 경희대학교 인문학연구소 2009 인문학연구 Vol.16 No.-
In this study, we have examined various source domains for the metaphors of interpersonal relationship in Japanese, and tried to establish some fundamental classes of image schemas underlying these metaphors. Also, we conducted a contrastive analysis of metaphors of interpersonal relationship. Both similarities and differences have been found between Japanese and Hungarian. We have seen that there appears to be a tendency in Japanese to exploit AMBIENCE/LIQUID more extensively, but it is matter of degree and conventionality, and is not a categorical difference. There are two remarks. First, universality and cultural diversity has been one of the highly important issues in the rich body of research on metaphor. And metaphors of interpersonal relationship that are closely connected to emotions seem to have lesser variety. This is probably because there is solid bodily basis for emotional metaphors, and the metaphors of interpersonal relationship that share this ground may not vary drastically across cultures. Second, while there is a plenty of psychological literature, studies specifically devoted to the way people talk metaphorically about this relationship are rather scarce. Many studies deal with people`s actual emotions and behaviors, and those referring to metaphors are mostly restricted to the attribution of personality. It is thus speculated that the method adopted in this study may provide a new research strategy for psychological research beyond the orthodox program of cognitive linguistics.
