The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the ways in which teachers utilize and engage with online spaces as a type of informal learning and to examine the social interactions that take place therein. This study involved members of three online affinity spaces designed for teachers -- Classroom 2.0, ProTeacher, and The Teachers Corner - and their asynchronous, online discussions (i.e., on a discussion board). It is presented as a case study using content and discourse analysis based upon the theoretical ideas of informal learning, specifically affinity spaces. The main research question guiding this study was: What types of discourse are shared in these online spaces for teachers? The supporting questions guiding this study were: What types of questions do participants pose? What types of responses do participants provide? What patterns of knowledge sharing emerge through the questions and responses? and What are the social interactions in the forum? Discussion postings were coded according to Arvaja's (2012) framework that distinguished types of discourse as elaboration, sharing, or others as resources for enhancing personal understanding. Discussion participants engaged others by posting questions or soliciting advice that reflected their own professional and personal learning needs in the moment; furthermore, the participants relied on personal experience and examples to support and legitimize their responses. Social comments contributed to the generally positive tone that permeated the discussions.

      • Predictors of postpartum body composition changes and physical activity level in women from three different ethnic groups: Asian, Hispanic and non-Hispanic White

Patterns of postpartum weight change influence body composition for several decades thereafter, therefore it is critical to understand how best to promote achievement of a healthy weight during this vulnerable period. This prospective, observational study examined ethnic differences in postpartum weight changes during lactation, and identified other predictors of change in body composition, physical activity and diet. The anthropometric measurements included: height, weight, skinfold thickness at the triceps, subscapular, mid-axillary, abdominal, suprailiac and thigh sites, circumferences at the waist and hip, and percent body fat. Data were also collected on maternal diet and on maternal and family attitudes and support towards diet and exercise. The ethnic groups did not differ significantly in age, prepregnancy BMI, or parity. Hispanic women were more likely to lose weight and Asians more likely to decrease body fat in the first six months compared to non-Hispanic Whites. Women who gained more weight during pregnancy lost more weight and had a greater decrease in their percent body fat postpartum than women with lower pregnancy weight gains. Family attitude and support variables were significant predictors of changes in body composition, though not in all time intervals. Exclusive breastfeeding was associated with greater weight loss between three and six months postpartum. In the first six months postpartum, time spent in exercise was associated with being older, higher education, higher income, more pregnancy exercise, having more family support of maternal diet choices, willingness to exercise and not being Hispanic. In the second six months, predictors of exercise included alcohol consumption and some of the attitudinal factors. Predictors of a higher Physical Activity Level score included higher education, higher income, a greater proportion of life in the U.S., more children, deriving happiness from exercise and willingness to exercise. In this sample of women, pregnancy weight gain is the strongest predictor of body composition changes, whereas exclusive breastfeeding, the family attitude and support variables, and ethnicity were predictors in a few time intervals. These results suggest that both biological and behavioral factors affect body composition changes during the first year postpartum.
